My apologies to you Boxer Blade; it wasn't meant to be personal (just thought the idea was mad!) but realise it was an insensitive comment to make. As far as the rivalry goes, I think the police have turned it into tribalism with an obsession with segregation. The lost days of supporters going to watch both teams is also probably indirectly due to over-zealous policing, together with crazy pricing policies too, and SWFC are amongst the craziest. Have a look at their attendances in the 1980s for example and as recently as 2012. Remember they are a permanent Premier League and Division One resident and have won things.

Give us their record and there would be very little difference. Their days as a "top five" club are long gone.

Snoots, my point is that rivalry has been there, but fierce? I am around the same age as you and remember my first games were when I was around 9/10, never any malice or trouble at the games or at school, infact as I have said people would famously go to each others ground on alternate weeks and support the " other" team, thats not fierce rivalry, I believe it started in the mid 60's when the sport started to grow and singing and chanting started, Monday morning at school when I was at secondary was all about what had gone off on Saturday, I remember it well, I was, like a lot of teenagers at the time involved in it.

I'm obviously of a similar age and have similar memories of the rivalry being intense without being bloody stupid and OTT, which it is now. We were able to sit with opposition fans at derby matches without wanting to kill each other. I think segregation within grounds may have had a paradoxical effect in fueling violence and hostility. This ritualistic goading of other fans is just embarrassing, sometimes by middle aged obese men, sitting with their children, pathetic.
First derby games I recollect you just turned up, paid your money and stood where you
liked. Much better atmosphere and the crowd was fairly evenly split with the home team having the majority of the crowd.

1: In the early 50's (1950 to 53) when Derek Dooley was playing, they averaged over 41K for 3 seasons running.
Two of those seasons were in division 2, this is probably when their ideas of having massive fanbase started.

2: In 1992 when they finished 3rd in the top flight they averaged 29,560.
This is their highest average attendance in the last 50 years.
It doesn't seem that impressive does it but in 1992 any crowd over 20K was impressive, so in context a 29K average back then was fantastic support.

Through out history, every piece of data, regards honours, seasons in the top flight, seasons in the championship, season in league 1,
overall FA cup record, average attendances and highest attendance are remarkably similar between United and Wednesday,

however they just edge us on almost every stat, but it's much closer than what people think.


3: Another fact is that is that our glory years winning honours was around 1900, similar to Sunderland we've done very little since the 1st world war.

Our claim to fame is that before the 2nd world war we spent almost our full history in the top flight
when out of the top flight we've been involved in promotion challenges 66% of the time.
Hence why when not in the top flight, our fans automatically expect we'll do well...because we almost always do.
This explains why in the historic win table, think we are 4th out of 92 league clubs.

Where as SWFC's pride is that they've had a really good team seriously challenging for honours in the early 30's, early 60's and early 90's

I'm not at my computer (on hols) but over the 50 year period our average league finish is about 28th, theirs 27th.
Their average home crowd over the same period approx. 23k to our our 21k.
They have 1 'major' trophy. We have 0.

Wouldn't swap their extremely minorly better history for our present. We're the bigger, better club as things stand.
They're totally irrelevant and have been for decades. Check social media followings.

Given the success of Liverpoool, London, Manchester and Glasgow's teams I think Sheffield would more than hold it's own attendance wise if it had the same level of success.

Man Utd, Arsenal and Celtic have the huge stadium big enough to stand out
But if we had the same level of success in the UK and Europe as those clubs there's no way Bramall Lane would be even close to being big enough, we'd have picked up support Nationally and Internationally as well

The question you should be asking is if Liverpool had had the same 50 years that we've had how many would they be getting, bearing in mind that 50 years ago Liverpool were a second division club going nowhere and constantly being overshadowed by their neighbours Everton.

50 years of our "achievements" on top of their ordinariness at the time and I don't think they'd have as many watching them as we do.

When Shankly was manager of Liverpool and they were in the 2nd tier they got 9k some games. Major major succes has lifted their attendances beyond theri own expectations
