Looks like 2 are on their way in, but which positions do we need improvements? (constructive suggestions only please)

For me it's a right winger with pace and another striker, again with pace & movement. If Blackman goes, Murphy is a natural replacement in the squad anyway - hopefully Diego will step up as back up.

Be interested to hear from some of the more analytical posters (bergs, silent, coops, ollie, foxy etc)...

Central midfielder and a winger in my opinion. Which is why I'm a bit worried by DW's suggestion yesterday that his priority is up front for new players.

Random suggestion for the middle of the park - Nigel Reo-Coker. Box-to-box type that we're lacking, just departed Ipswich in search of a longer-term deal. Probably wouldn't drop another division, though I'm still surprised Higginbotham has tbh.

We need a Miller. Our team looked balanced when we had a natural finisher/goalscorer in the side. I think this and a winger are necessary. CM would be the icing on the cake, but I think a winger and a striker and larger priorities.

Duffy seems to be a strong rumour and I think he would be a good addition. Then a striker, well Pogba from Crewe would be ideal, but not sure on his availability. Maybe Madden from Yeovil? Freeman from Stevenage?

I'd like to see the lad Duffy and suspect he may be one.

No point signing a winger though if he's told to cut inside at every opportunity!

Think we need someone with a bit of mobility and athleticism in the middle!

Given Swindon are in a complete financial mess, it might be worth a cheeky offer for Andy Williams. Or someone to give some competition in the middle of midfield like Simon Ferry, who I think was a Wilson signing for them.

Competition for McDonald and Doyle

This would definitely be my priority. If we can find someone suitable we'd ideally want someone who could play with either of them, thus making both of them droppable as well as providing cover.

We're also looking light on the wings and upfront as has been said. Murphy has perhaps been signed to switch between the two as Blackman has done. If that's the case maybe we did another versatile forward who can play wide if needs be.

To my mind we need four positions covered - A midfield ballwinner/workhorse, a midfield ball player, another winger and another striker. If we can cover all that with two signings I'll be very pleased!

A tall, athletic central midfielder and a quick striker.

If Blackman leaves we'll have to look for a winger as well. I'd consider taking a chance on Keanu Marsh-Brown, who's quick and skilful, but by all accounts a bit of a problem child. He's just been released by Yeovil after falling out with Gary Johnson. If Chris Morgan has a spare room he could live there by his rules and get paid as he played? ;)

I'd like Judge from Notts County, I wanted us to sign him in the summer when I think we were keen, but that ain't gonna happen.

Being saying for a couple of years how good he is and subsequently felt guilty when he got the equaliser the other week! Maybe one for if we go up?

For all this knocking, I do like the fact that we are seemingly going for younger promising players.

Incidentally has Foxy configmed if these 2 are perms or loans?

I'd like to see an athletic central midfielder but given the limited funds I doubt we'll be signing anyone as back up and that (rightly or wrongly) is all any CMs we sign will be.

Because of that I'd like to see a mobile centre forward and a pacey right winger - assuming Blackman leaves. If he doesn't, a forward thinking full back would be my preference.

if we sign a young player and he does well he'll be sold on in the summer anyway! lets get a 34 year old on loan

Anybody with a name like that gets my vote!!
As Jim Royle once said 'Keanu My Arse !

If Blackman is indeed going (and I think we can stipulate to that), then Williamson wouldn't be a bad shout. He can play in that position and knows the turf, though of course it would be a regressive step.

We have gone from having tonnes of pace in the centre forward position to zero pace. We had Blackman, Cofie and Miller. Now we have immobile geriatrics (Cresswell and Kitson, though Kitson remains a useful player), immobile players in their prime (Porter), and in an attempt not to destroy the fragile confidence of young players, young strikers not blessed with alarming speed (Ironside, who seems to developing as more of a target man). Given this I wouldn't be against a quick striker, even though it seems like we have a kerjillion players in that position at the moment.

The centre midfield is a problem:

Doyle is awful but Wilson isn't going to drop the captain (why people criticized Bergen and I for pointing out the idiocy of extending his contract I cannot fathom).

McDonald seems to be in a situation where he requires handing with sensitivity so that he can produce his best.

Whitehouse, the obvious replacement, would ideally be brought in to replace Doyle. But if whoever is brought in is a central midfielder, we can forget about his development for another year. So in a way I hope they aren't.

A left winger would be a good idea.

All the above is based on the understanding that Foxy's information is correct, the obvious fact that selling Blackman is a terrible idea, and the absolute certainty that we are going to see little of Diego, much as we would like.

Fundamentally it's difficult to get excited about the (putative) arrival of new players when the squad as a whole lack cohesion, effort, fluidity and determination. It is this that needs to be addressed, and it isn't something that a couple of new faces can affect.

Up front we now have four target men (Kitson, Porter, Cresswell and Ironside), with Blackman possibly off and Murphy preferred out wide. I would be very surprised if the forward coming in is not a quick/goalgetter type.

Freeman would be a good idea, but I don't see it. He was a free agent in the summer and we were crying out for a talented player in that position. If we didn't get him for free then, we aren't going to pay money for him now.

We need a Stuart McCall type player and a pacy replacement for Blackman if he is, indeed, off.
BUT we also need someone with genuine pace who is a genuine threat out wide and can beat a player on the outside and deliver a cross. In that way we bring into play Kitson, porter and Ironside (plus Cress if he still has a pulse). That's the crying shame about the current situation. They are being wasted cos we don't create such opportunities.
Someone like a younger David Cotterill would be ideal. Look how Cotts is ripping up this division this year.

Central midfield seems to be an issue. Competition for either might be useful, I've seen him a few times and, though unlikely to sign, I'd welcome Jose Baxter. Young, likes to pass and has more than a point to prove.
