We beat Chelsea 4-2 at the Lane to confirm our safety from relegation in the first PL season and cement a 14th place finish. We were 4-0 up after about a hour (Scott, Rogers, Whitehouse 2), but then eased off and Chelsea got 2 very late on.

How things change...

I remember that game vividly. Beautiful day, Andy Scott's debut, Deane feeding Whitehouse for a great goal, celebrations at the end...

Chelsea with no Russian cash , highly beatable
Why didnt we get the cash , why did no one ever want to back us , even then
I mean come on. we had Dane Whitehouse

In a strange moment of rashness I decided to go for us to win 4-1 at 80/1 (£5).

We scored the fourth so soon after half time I thought the game was up. However, we declared and Alan Kelly made an uncharacteristic error to let Chelsea in at 4-1 late on. One person on the Kop rose to acclaim this goal amid cries of "get in, 400 notes". Just minutes later the bastards scored again (looked miles offside from where I was) amidst much gnashing of teeth but plenty of amusement from nearby seats.

Happy days, seems a lifetime ago.

Shit, 20 years ago. Whats worse is its only 7 years ago we were going back to the Premier League with a healthy future ahead of us. What sort of bumfuckery got to into the mess we are in?

There was once a similar article in Flashing Blade about a guy who had bet on us to beat Reading 3-0 in March 1998. We went 3-0 up after about a hour and the said person was urging United to "keep it tight" and "not take any risks". All seemed well until the last minute when Wayne Quinn tucked away a 4th. Bastard!
