Trusty and the JoC role

I've never been one of those able to 'spot a system' that's being played.
It always mystifies me when commentators say something like 'Looks like he's abandoned his preferred formation and gone to a 4-2-1-2-1 triangle with a holding false number 8' or whatever. How the f**k can you tell?!!
Anyway, I spotted Trusty do a couple of runs down the left last night into JoC territory and wondered if we might be seeing a hybrid of what worked so successfully in the early years, and what now seems to be a much more swift counterattacking style with...dare I say it... 4 at the back, or 2 or 5?

Or, we've cut that many forwards players and struggled to move on any of our dog shit defenders, so we have to play a system that reflects the imbalance in our squad - eg: 5 defenders on the pitch at any one time....

He came on and played left back so that's probably why he was getting forward. The formation didn't really change despite the subs, other than the 10 mins or so without a striker on the field.
