True Genius-level Blades

Watching Coutts, Fleck and Duffy every week in league one was a joke. They were clearly so far above that level as shown by the fact we went top of the championship when Coutts got injured. Still wish we'd had the chance to see them in the premier league just to see what they were capable of

Yeah I remember that. It was in a game just after Deano chipped Grobbelaar. It hit the underside of the bar and came down the wrong side of the line. If it had gone in it would have been even better than Deano's. Anybody got a video of it?
Remember it. It came back of the bar to Bobby Davison who launched a flying header at it, that went just over.

They were a rare thing indeed

Some of Fjortoft’s finishing…🤌 😘

I remember one proper bit of "genius from Fjortoft. I think it was home against Portsmouth, attacking the Bramall Lane end. He ran down the left channel into the area and dived to win a penalty. Everyone stopped for a moment waiting for a decision, whereupon Fjortoft promptly got up and scored while no-one else was playing.

His other goal in that match was a cracker too, chipping the 'keeper from the edge of the box.

In Div 3 during the 1988/89 season Deano scored two goals where a low, hard cross came in and with his back to goal he flicked the ball up and over the keeper. The first time it looked like a fluke, but then he did it again in another game proving it wasn't. Still not sure to this day how he did it!

Remember Paul Devlin scoring for us at home, cant remember who it was against but he picked ball up on edge of area in front of kop, went full length of pitch and scored from range. Also a Tri Dellas thunderbolt strike from about 40 odd yards in front of kop.

McGoldrick v Man Utd at home in the 3-3, ball got played to him down the line and he dummied it taking about 2 players out with it while the ball rolled to Fleck.

McGoldrick v Aston Villa where he passed it over his head to Fleck to score.

McGoldrick v Derby on Boxing Day where he lobbed the keeper from about 25 yards.

Bit of a theme here, god I miss Didsy.

Warnocks first game as manager, 1-0 win over Portsmouth.

Thanks for those clips. Hodges was one of those players where you expected some magic each time he got the ball.
Another of my favourites was Vas Borbokis in the late nineties. He only scored six goals in the two seasons he was at the Lane but they were nearly all cracking free kicks from outside the area which Glyn Hodges would have been proud of

MGW in almost all the games in the build up to the play-off’s.

He was on fire, even though not all his tricks came off. The back heel goal against Boro was absolute quality. We may not have seen him at his peak while with us but surely he will get regular first team Premiership football for many seasons to come.

As for ‘genius level’ over a period of time- only Tony Currie comes to mind.

Jags against Leeds a great goal against a shithouse of a club

Leon Clarke putting on a masterclass scoring four goals against Hull City. I remember one of the Hull players shaking his hand as he made his way off to a standing ovation from the fans. Obviously realized he had just witnessed true greatness.

My memory is a little obscure and my description will not do it justice.

FA Cup 4th Round Replay v Charlton in February 1992 at Bramall Lane.

Typical rainy night and a greasy pitch. Tracey punts a long kick which is arcing towards the touchline. Deano runs wide from the central area of the pitch to chase the ball, followed by a defender. He gets to the ball while still running just as it appears to be going out of play. In one beautiful fluid movement he traps the ball with his back to goal and does a "Cruyff" style turn, keeping the ball in play whilst leaving his marker trailing in his wake and gets down the touchline before sending in a lovely cross....

Any Blade from that time will ruefully remember that Deano was a fantastic crosser of a ball, but unfortunately we needed another Brian Deane in the middle to head them in!

I remember Peter Ndlovu in front of the South stand controlling the ball with a scorpion esque kick after an over hit pass to him.

I've had to run and retrieve the ball dozens of times since I saw that trying to recreate it and just missing the ball completely
If memory serves, that was the only highlight from one of the most boring games I've ever been to.
