Might not be a surprise to anyone this

- We've identified (using OPTA stats and the opinions of Mitchell, Knill & Wilder) the best 5 players in EVERY position in the Championship as a shortlist and that's where most of our business will be done
- No 10 is tricky because there aren't many good ones in the Championship, apparently we've identified the best 5 suited to that role no matter where they've operated most of the season/their career
- Lundstram will be staying in and around the squad unless he chooses to move on and play first team football, as will Stearman and Moore

Assuming you're correct, that seems like a very reasonable plan.

The number 10 thing is interesting but unsurprising. There aren't many stand outs. And after what we've done with Duffy, it's logical to look at players who have the capability to play there regardless of what they've done so far in their career. Wingers with good intelligence and ball retention ability are ones to look at. Especially as they'll typically have pace.

There's one stand out number 10 in the Championship for the Duffy role though and that's Luke Freeman. He's as like for like as we can get, and we should look for one of those so we don't end up in a position where our 1 behind 2 strikers isn't viable.

I'd argue Canos is better than Freeman.

And Jota !

Good players, but different. They both typically operate from the right side. Also more lightweight. And foreign. Probably more expensive too.

It's not only the ability to play the position, but the ability to be the sort of possession hub that Duffy is for us.

Romaine Sawyers would be a good option. Can play more than one role. Last year of contract. Similar stage of his development to Freeman - both have been made captains this season.

The player in the ten role has to be as good off the ball as they are on it.They also have to be able to work in a style that favours overloads, rather than swift counter attacks - retaining possession until others join in. That's on the proviso that we are going to play the same way. This rules out the likes of Jota, Benrama, Canos, Celina etc. I've only seen Freeman and Bowen who I think have the attributes, although I'd prefer a more athletic player to Freeman. Bowen would cost mega money, so I think we can rule him out.

Also mentioned Nick Powell who will be on the released list soon :-)

I'm not sure what you've said rules any of them out.

Not good enough off the ball. Several of them play in a counter attacking style. Our ten is our key player out of possession. If we play in the Madine Dowell counter attacking system (plan B) the options get bigger.

He is a fit for the specific Duffy role but I'm not sure he's good enough physically and off the ball. Would gladly take him on trial though. Great natural ability and he would've been a quality PL player without the injury setbacks.

I thought Powell played a bit deeper, or am I mistaken?

I was working with his Dad when he moved to Man U for 7m, just never happened for him there unfortunately, but it certainly set him up financially.

Pretty sure he plays similar role to Duffy.

We will have to counter attack more next season.

So the quick, direct types aren't out of the question at all.

Counter attacking would favour a 2 behind 1 striker system. That would also make our recruitment easier, as it would significantly widen our search net for attacking midfielders. And give us more pacy players to choose from.

I would like a system where all 3 attacking players can play as forwards, and at least 2 can drop deeper. Flexibility.

Who can the best 2 overlapping central defenders be? Cranie and Enda? There surely aren't any others..

I’d say it’s quite important to get the average age of the squad down a touch too.

Interesting stuff, has the ring of truth about it.

But surely we’re not after signing a new player in every position? What four, five, or six positions will be our priority signings?

Not sure who we're after if I'm honest, but shortlisting the best 5 in every position is probably a good idea

Does this theory take into consideration who else will be promoted with us?
