Whatever we do have to spend we'll only find out months later when Chris is hammered and he lets slip like he did with Norwood.

£20m by our standards is pretty high!

It’s about setting the club up when all around face an uncertain future, making the most of this chance to put the club beyond doubt as a sustainable club long term.
Yes we might all want us to spunk £15-20m on a top striker or three, but realistically that just isn’t going to happen. It’s all about balance and doing things the right way.

At the moment, I would suggest the biggest playing asset we have is probably Norwood or Fleck. Both tied to decent contracts and at the top of their game, internationals (just about), and now seasoned pro’s with high performance level data in the championship to back it up. I would say they would cost a club after their signature close to the £10m pound mark.
The rest are nowhere near that value, with JOC and Egan being the closest.
So, you can’t just drop 3 £20m players in there, with their inflated egos or whatever and not expect some wedges to be driven between the players.

It’s slow and gradual...it has to be that way. If we survive, the likes of JOC, Egan, Fleck and Norwood can then finally claim to be the top players they want to be, and will be worth the superstar wages and fees. Whoever we sign...in the £3-6m bracket will also see their value go up....so my point is that this time next year, survival dependant would be the time to find a couple of big money players, spend a little more and push on again.
Your valuations are way off.

JOC is easily our most prized asset. We wanted £15mil for him in the summer and Brighton offered £8mil.

I can see JOC leaving for silly £ when the transfer window opens. If not then deffo in January if he keeps playing as he has done all season.

It's not the old Premiership anymore. We can't just do it on the cheap

If it is £20m or around that, that is pretty terrible

That's a simplistic comment based on little other than the large sum - £190 mil has been quoted - that has repeated on here.

When Wilder says "around that figure" you need to be generous and imagine anything between £15-30 mil, rather than a strict £20 mil. The truth is no one knows apart from those in United's magic circle. Plus you need to include our manager's reputation for striking canny deals, so there are bound to be surprises that work in our favour. Rather than begin with a negative, try and imagine what could happen given our manager's approach to bringing in players. If we fail, we fail, but what you need to avoid is constructing a scenario based on simple sums. Of course money helps, no one's denying this, but rather than chase our tail and spend, spend, spend, let's see if the approach that has brought Wilder success so far is capable of delivering this coming season.

I think we have to back the players we have and spend the money modestly. Around the £30m mark would get us a couple of £10m signings, a couple of £5m, plus 2 loans. So 6 players in total.

The wage bill would probably rise to £40m. There is the ground upgrade to be Premier League compliant and a sensible move to upgrade the infrastructure. That’s probably not far off £100m spent.

Fulham as opposed to Cardiff and Huddersfield have approached it with an ‘all in’ mentality and got relegated with 5 games to go. They do however, have an extremely wealthy owner who may have bankrolled the majority of that. We don’t have that, yet !

A couple of 10 million pound signings
We will never ever spend 10 million pounds on one player!
Be a couple of loans maybe a couple at 5mil that will be it.

Spending 20 million next season, would put us on a par with the lowest spending tight arse clubs. You seem very confident it will be below 10 million (which is on a par with the Oystons at Blackpool) when all the evidence suggests otherwise.

If Wilder doesn’t receive in the ball park of 20 mil to spend (the amount he’s expecting based on the shopping list he’s given the club), which isn’t that much these days for a PL team, then he’ll surely be gone.

We are a tight arse club! If we spend 20 million I'll be gob smacked!
Can anyone seriously see us buying 2 players at 10 million each?!
I don't think there will be wholesale changes, although we do need competition for places and quality back up, 5/6 at most.

It’s uncharted territory but I don’t see why not or at least moving towards the £10m mark for a player or two. We have to remember that a couple of our players will command that fee (or more) should they prove themselves.

Nonsense. None of us have ever supported United at a time when we have such an income. Your pursuit of doom and gloom at the expense of common sense is unimpressive.

Are you a pig fan on the wind up? You don’t talk about the team or players.
The recent facts show that tight arse smallish clubs spend 20 million a year on transfers when they go up. Agree we probably tight arse whilst the ownership battle is ongoing, hence we’ll spend around 20 mil, as Wilder has already said he expects to to receive.

THE AVERAGE NET SPEND of the 6 freshly promoted clubs over the last 2 years is over 43 million.
Even the likes of Cardiff spent 17 million on Sala last season, or at least tried to spend that amount.

You say we’ll spend 10 million max. I say we’ll spend at least 20 million plus some massive salaries on loans.
Let’s have a small £10 bet, payable by donation to this forum.

I’m true to my word and will promise to pay it but I’m very confident you’ll be proven wrong.
To be honest I think you’re just attention seeking because you’re choosing to ignore the evidence.

Prepare to be gob smacked.

Suppose we'll have to wait and see what happens.
Think some people have got carried away with the "we're getting £190 million for going up so we must be spending at least £50 mil on new players"
It's Sheffield United, Sheffield United don't spend money! People are in for a shock if they think we're going to be going out and buying players for £10 million or more!

Anston is a pig fan, check out his posting history.

Every post about how we’ve no money and won’t spend a penny next season.
He thinks we’re going to be another Blackpool (when Oyston was in charge) when of course Wilder wouldn’t accept it,
Not one post about our team, the players or his opinion of a single match.

You’ve been rumbled, thought you were coming across all deluded ignoring the facts, now it makes sense.

We quite simply have to bring in some quality.

There is not a single problem in buying players that can get better and be worth more, even if we are relegated after one season. It's all down to judgement and the management teams judgement hasn't been bad up to now.

Go and convince Jarrod Bowen to sign for us. He is good enough to start in the new first 11 and has the talent to flourish. £15m and a big sell on for Hull. He starts the last 12 months of his contract, so Hull sell or lose him. He will be no good to us in January - buy now or look else where.

We need a centre forward. if Villa don't go up, someone needs to sign Abraham. Chelsea should hopefully want to see him in the premier league just as man U want to see how Hendo performs. If not Abraham, then we must get someone else. It cannot be Hogan or Madine - they must go back. this centre forward needs to start in the first 11.

We need to look at what players are released by prem teams to pressure our existing players in a few positions. We have no real cover for JOC or Stevens - this must be resolved.

John obi Mikel as proposed by others could be a good shout. He could fit into the middle of midfield instead of a No10 in some games. we've played 352 a number of times when we want to be solid and the time for Basham to do that job has to end. We need a specialist to sit in the middle in some games.

I just don't think Wilder will want to bring £20-30 million pounds worth of players in, I don't think there will be wholesale changes to be honest.
If we can get Hendo on loan for the season, the defence will remain the same, Fleck and Norwood will start only question marks are strikers?

It’s not about what you or I think....it’s all about the budget Wilder is given, he will know more than either of us.

He’s already said in the radio interview yesterday that he plans to spend a similar amount to the amount reported that Norwich will spend (he was referring to their 20 million). He’s also said he’s already drawn up a shopping list of potential players he’d like totalling in the same ball park as that figure and given it to the club.

Is £20 million enough though? Let's be honest In today's premier league its peanuts.
We need to add some quality and competition for places, maybe a couple of new first choice strikers?
No one knows how the current squad will fair some might be able to make the step up some might not?

Can't see it being enough we will need firepower and with £20m it will just not be enough unless we sign some quality free agents and a decent loan

Looking at how sir Chris of Wilder has performed in the team building and transfer market up to date, I’d say if he was given anywhere up to £50 million we’d be Champions league very shortly !

Wilder said he’s given the club a shopping list of players with a spend similar to what Norwich have said they are spending next season. So he expects to be given 20 mil for transfers (would imagine this excludes wages and loans) but he also said the board haven’t agreed or given him a figure yet and he’s hoping the boardroom dispute is sorted sooner rather than later.
CW is far too canny to broadcast to everyone what his kitty is. If you tell everyone you have £50 mill to spend it makes negotiating reasonable transfer fees even more difficult. Just saying we expect to be spending in the same ball park figure as Norwich, which is probably a modest amount considering the projected PL income, is an easy way of not revealing his true hand which in actuality may be rather better.
Based on past experience I am confident he will do what is necessary to keep us up.

I'm no accountant but if we spend 30 mill in summer, 15 mill in January if required, have wages of 52 mill giving each man of the 25 man squad 40k/week, United will still have change from the 100 million quid we'll get for coming bottom. The wages will be contracted to reduce if we get relegated (I'm no mastermind but fuck me, how hard can it be to write that into a contract?), leaving the parachute payments to 'chase the dream'. And who knows, we may even have other income streams to support the other club wages and activities.
