A few years ago I shit a brick of excitement at the thought of us getting Dean Hammond and chasing Dan Burn.

It wasn't that long ago that we'd be breathing a sigh of relief if we'd made it through a transfer window without selling someone. Beattie, Kyles, Maguire, Murphy. It always felt like we weren't allowed nice things and we were well down the pecking order, for other clubs to poach from. Stoke, Spurs, Hull and Brighton for those four sales, for example.

Remember the days when we’d spend the transfer window with fingers crossed that we wouldn’t sell our best players to ‘balance the books’

Takes me back to when I was 12 and my first wet dream.

It's absolutely crackers. We're currently right where I'd always hoped we'd be - back in the top flight and with a shout of staying up.

Then in other sense, we're right where I could only dream we'd be - quality of player, cost of signing, style of football.

Years ago, these builds would take years of careful planning. They still require care but with the instant riches of the premier league and TV money, things really are fast tracked.

As for being here, McCabe really did luck out with Wilder and Knill. They got us here despite McCabe's level of backing, not thanks to it.

Just seen the video again of transfer deadline day before we started our first season back in the championship when Wilder was filmed trying to buy players. He got Ben Heneghan and Clayton and missed out on Sinclair, Quina and Devante Cole. Times have changed

Contrast the past image of the naked Warnock bollocking the team whilst applying lube to his arsenal, with Wilder, centre forward in one arm , Peroni in the other singing, "we got Billy Sharp", its no surprise who players want to play for.

We won’t really know how good PA is until CW leaves. Remember Kev was pretty popular during the Warnock era, when we were relatively successful. A good manager can plaster over plenty of cracks. Hopefully it’s not something we have to worry about for a while.
