Sunderland have always had good support but their gates are falling. 3000 Blades today so only 23000 Mackems. Poor for them but still not bad in the scheme of things. They were very quiet though. But they do travel in numbers and are very vocal away from home.

They're a fickle bunch in the North East.

Only place in the country with more floating fans than the Pigs. I know crowds are up most places than on 20 plus years ago, ourselves included, but where the fuck have Sunlen and Toon got the best part of 30k extra fans from since the late 80s early 90s. They couldn't fill smaller grounds in the top flight.

How smaller are the crowds at the SoL now compared to a couple of years ago even?

I think north east fans in general are a decent bunch. Passionate, knowledgeable, down to earth and not too scummy.

Sunderland fans were quiet today but that's what I'd expect. It's a real shit time for them. And I don't see that disjointed team improving things for them too much anytime soon.

They're undoubtedly bigger than Wednesday, yes. Their expectations are equally out of kilter though.

I remember a conversation with a Newcaslte fan a few years ago when they were lower mid table around October time. When I asked what I thought they're chances were this season his reply was "yeah, I think we can probably still make the European places."

"Oh no, I meant what do you think your chances are of avoiding relegation?"

He looked at me like I was mental.

They were relegated. Just looking back and it was 08/09.

Newcastle are bigger than Chelsea for me as a comparison and look what they've done. Newcastle are just owned by an owner who doesn't know what hes' doing half the time. If they ever got their act together they could be a top 6 regular. Proper club in my view. As are Sunderland but they'e obviously on a downer. Other than today I wish Sunderland well.

3,000 from us today is quality and I don't think other clubs realise how big we are to be honest.

Knew I wouldn't get Blades tickets for this so booked tickets in the home section close to the away fans ages ago, the lack of segregation was weird considering how much spare room they could have had, but the bit down the front just had a steward or two unlike the police further back, and there were Blades all around what was supposed to be a home gangway. Was quite surreal to be in a home section surrounded by Blades in full voice. Their fans even joined in with a few of our chants, mostly them being wank and us taking the piss, which was nice.

Exactly where I was sat, was a touch surreal, don't see any reason why they couldn't have relocated the handful of Sunderland fans across the aisle from me and given us more tickets

Sorry, slip of the finger. ;)

Like us the Makems have a proud history. Their nickname derives from their boast of 'makking ' the great ships. When I was in Bilbao their strip which is similar to ours was paraded everywhere. Thinking that like Derry City who adopted the red and white stripes in honour of their manager, the great Billy Gillespie ( hero of our 1925 FA cup final ) victory I hoped it was our influence that encouraged the red and white strip. However I discovered that Athletic Bilbao was founded by Sunderland shipwrights who had gone over to show the Spanish how to 'mak their ships'. They retained the Anglacised prefix Athletic in spite of Franco's opposition being proud Basques. How much better than getting your name from Pork butchers who had Wednesday afternoon off ?

And how intimidating it was. I remember their entrance music.
I can't remember the exact music but it was a dramatic build up (similar to our own countdown to kick off). Not sure it was the entrance music though was it, didn't the come out to something like Republica "ready to go"?

I went there for the league game and then the following season (i think) for the play off second leg, the latter was a very misty night and it was intimidating as hell, the noise was unreal. Was really impressed with the Stadium of light back then. Its a pity they can no longer fill it!

Got to say thought coppers were spot on. We were sat on back row and 2 plod in front had a good laugh with us. When we scored his hat went missing and he disappeared underneath the celebrating Blades.

Just laughed it off. Good to see. Instead of the usual twats you get.
We're seeing more and more of this nowadays when we travel. Sadly a lot of our own fans let themselves and us down, but so do a lot of coppers.

Also, at home games, we don't seem to see the same behaviour from the Police in South Yorks.

We have to remember that the police are there because of a few twats and its a thankless task, but if there is respect on both sides you can generally have some banter with the coppers. Certainly makes for a better atmosphere when the Police are friendly.

We won't get that at Leeds, Barnsley or the sty

I think the music was Wagner's Flight of the Valkyries.

I'd say Mike Ashley knows exactly what he's doing, Mags make a profit every year ;)
