In the real World
Amidst the euphoria of our league position its timely to suggest that we make additions/changes from a position of strength. Too often in recent years we have not done so and paid the price. I think/hope that DW has the nouse to realise that, against the better teams, we do show some fragility at the back as we did against Carlisle. If you score twice and lose it is a warning sign. Its only 11 January I realise and there seems little movement anywhere but we always seem to engage in a bit of brinkmanship leaving it to the last minute...as with the Fleck fiasco. The old saying "failing to plan is planning to fail" seems appropriate. Simmo seems to have put some of the nightmares behind him but he is advancing in age. Is Long good enough? I have not seen him but the reports from those of you who have are not inspiring, despite the rumour of interest from the Premiership. I think a gk is a must and a full back as cover.

I think we need a right back as it's not Lowton's natural position and it sometimes show's in his positional play. He's much better going forward and should be fighting it out for a position on the wing with a solid full back behind.

Don't get me wrong I think he's a cracking player but we've had too many players over the last few years playing out of position.

I'm sure Wilson knows this but unfortunately it's down to the directors to dictate whether we push on or surrender.

History tells us that if we fail to bring in the quality now, we could end up getting left behind. So the board have to have some faith in the man they have brought in to manage the team and get us promotion.

Its difficult to read Wilson on where he needs to strengthen and the youngsters he's prepared to bring in.

Philiskirk, Tonne, McAllistair, Parrino have all been on the fringes, but not stepped up or been allowed to step up.

So heres my run through the team:

GK - Long isn't really ready yet, we need an experienced competitor for Simmo.
RB - Urgent back up required for Lowton. I'm Happy with Lowton as he continues to learn the defensive part of the game. Midfield move should be considered next season. Is Parrino the back up plan?
LB - I'm not overly excited about either LJF or Williams, but we have cover and they are both fairly ok, LJF gets the nod on his day, but with Taylor coming back I think we're ok here
CB - Collins and Harry have this sewn up for now. Ertl as back up, Perhaps a second back up would be prudent as its a key position.
RM - Seems to be filled with temporary solutions, Willo when he's on fire can make this his own, Flynn can float between left and right. If we can get a permanent competitor for Willo then lets get him. Flynn could steal this if he gets the consistency. In fact he should be stealing this and forcing Willo to compete in the middle. Could Philiskirk, Tonne fit in here?
LM - Quinnys slot, but Flynn could also steal this.
DM - Monty and Doyle fighting this out, can't see anyone else to play the role.
CM - Macca is currently unchallenged here. Willo should be pushing him but can't get near him just now. Same goes for McAllistair.
Striker - Ched, Porter, Cresswell, BT... Seems to be enough when you consider Tonne and Philiskirk could also come in, but I think we could do with a Peschisolido type, a Kevin Phillips type poacher.

Priorities for me - GK, RB, RM and Goal Poacher

Agree, get a right back, centre half and a forward and forget about signing Beattie, we can then make the top two rather that play-offs as we all know we'll end up losing in the final

based upon previous experience.. i'd be happy to keep what we have already, never mind buying new players.. i'll be shitting myself at 1 minute to midnight

Agree with Muttley on this one. DW will no doubt have his plans depending on what happens but ultimately, it'll be the Board who decide our strategy if and when any bids come in.

As Swiss says, we're pretty well covered throughout the squad but loss of players who have featured heavily this season could see us struggle, particularly if they take place at the 11th hour which is usually the case. The good thing is, DW has a system in place now and the squad seem pretty good at slotting in and inter-changing when needed. For obvious reasons, you'd expect any potential targets to be able to fit in fairly quickly as Phillips and Clarke seemed to do.

He doesn't sound like he's panicking and did say that we needed bodies before xmas regardless of who leaves but no doubt it's going to be a nervous few weeks for DW.

Every manager will say that he would like another 2 - 3 players. However, sometimes bringing in new players can upset the balance of a team.

It's remarkable how DW has moulded a team of 'average' players into the passing/scoring side that we see today and it would be wrong to make any big changes at this time. However, maybe we need a few extra bodies in case of injury. Surely Collins and Maguire can't go through the entire season without an injury or suspension?

>It's remarkable how DW has moulded a team of 'average' players into the passing/scoring side that we see today
indeed it is. i'm awaiting the first chants of 'danny wilsons red and white army' with interest.. we can even do corners these days and free kicks! (and not just the one where they bump into each other.. groan.. again)

We can do corners when Quinn doesn't take them - he normally hits the first man - Willo and Flynn have had far better delivery.
Having said that Quinn's cross for the first goal last night was a peach. It beat the first man and curled away from the keeper.
Love to see a good cross and a thumping header hit the back of the net.

Much as I like the football being played now and think that McD has a superb range of passing and is gaining confidense with every game, I think we may need to strengthen with a more physical midfield player who is a tall bugger to offer something different when we come up against more physical teams. Is Ertl the answer here? We have been found wanting with the likes of Wycombe, Stevenage and Wendy (although Stevenage can mix it) in midfield since we lack height and bite in there when it is a physical game. Very happy with Doyle and McD when we are dictating the game, like last night, but when the midfield goes missing or the opposition play five in their we lose control of the game.

Cover for Lowton (someone with pace that can overlap) is definitely an area we need to look at - using Monty and Ertl there is a stop gap not a solution.

What on earth does your opening line mean?

Of course the board has faith. The problem is fans like you who haven't and who expect him to lead us seamlessly to promotion.

Not really. He's a sensible manager who seems to have realised that Monty is a 3rd choice L1 right back.

The throw ins still need work though (minor gripe but annoying)

Just thinking back to many seasons where we seem to sell the family silver in Jan when were sitting in a decent position, rather than strengthen our position.

Yes I expect him to lead us to promotion

All them too, I never followed the logic behind thne sale of the two Kyles

Have a look at the accounts of Blades Realty Ltd and you might follow the logic.

Fair enough, but we are skint. We may lose Evans. Huddersfield, Charlton and Wendy are exceptionally strong sides. We may get 90 points and finish 3rd and not go up.

our last visit here we ended up as runnersup behind wolves who had 90 points
we had 84 in the end
we lost 4 home games and 8 away games, with Deane Agana etc so 12 defeats
We are 5 points better off after 25 games than that season

Just heard Danny on RS and we dont have to circulate we need to sell players , might send out some youngsters for games
If we KEEP what we have we,ll just need some mild tweeking

I would be happy just to keep the current squad together.(I never thought i would ever hear me sen saying that!!)

Youngsters

Just seen on the OS that Tonne and McAllister have both signed deals until 2014.
Chappel and Adams have signed until the end of the season.

Parrino has been released though

>We can do corners when Quinn doesn't take them
that's what i mean .. he doesn't take them anymore!
