But pretty much every club is in that position up and down the land. Virtually no club invests within its means in the sense that would apply to most other businesses.
Our losses are relatively small and manageable (and in the last year covered by sell-on income) which lends itself to making sensible investment now.

You can't have a sensible debate with someone that says things he doesn't mean in order to appease others, is unable to define what he means by "sensible investment", and thinks he knows the club and the clubs directors finances inside out.

One minute he will make a statement that i fully agree with, the next minute he will qualify it with a "But" that totally contradicts it.

In a Junior Computer Manager world where finance is limited to how much you spend and receive on players and the massive real world running costs applicable to business simply don’t apply.

It’s nearly time for the January sales and I need a new TV. One of those 65” 4K UHD OLEDs is exactly what I need and it’s available at Currys for a sensible price.

I can think of no reason why you should not invest in it for me. I’ll let you come round and watch it whenever you like, of course, but you mustn’t sell it to anybody else. Alternatively, I require you to find someone else to buy me not only the TV but a Bang and Olufsen Home Cinema.

With hindsight. Something your current statement about sensible investment can't take into account. We're dealing with owners, agents, players, egos. If it was that simple, no one would lose money because investing "sensibly" would surely be available to everyone?
