Time to decide, Jose - the pies or the pitch?

Hes not fat obviously he wouldn't get anywhere near the team if he was overweight ,these things are monitored all the time and his BMI will be spot on. He has a frame like Alex Sabella and does look like him from a distance. Baxters problem for me is in his head ,I think he thinks he is much better than he is and therefore he doesn't have to work as hard ,a lot seem to buy into this too ,with the 'only player with quality' bollocks that keeps being repeated. He has got ability but footballers have to work as well ,that is part of the modern day game and he could play at a higher level if he could do this. I fear a career which has gone from more promising than Rooney to 3rd division could go completely down the toilet if he doesn't shape up mentally and that would be a shame.

There's a debate in Norway at the moment regarding how much players at the top level train. Apparently it is less now than in the 90s when Norway had a good team and many exports. I read an article where players who'd played abroad were asked about the amount of training they did in different countries. According to the replies there was very little training being done in England, compared to some other nations like Germany and Italy.

Part of the reason may be the amount of games being played, which sometimes gives little room for more than recreation training. Nigel Clough said that some players didn't like training Mondays if there was a Tuesday game, which probably confirms it.

Nevertheless players are not at peak physical condition all the time and some players would perform better if they put in more work, or were allowed to do it - sometimes players with a knock are being instructed not to train in order to have them ready to play a day or two later. They'll feel ok, rested and will be available, but their stamina won't be at its best.

Egil Østenstad said he finished in the middle of stamina tests at Viking. While at Southampton he was consistently in the top three.

We have our differences regarding Baxter but i agree with a lot of what you put there.I also think if he gets it into his head that he needs to work that bit harder he could be a lot better player.

Regarding his weight, that really isn't or shouldn't be a debate, because like you say,he wouldn't get anywhere near the team if he was fat.

The only player with any real quality isn't true either,we have Wallace when fit,Scouggs when back to form and i think he started to show it a bit on Saturday as his movement and work rate tracking back and shutting down was brilliant,it also started a few attacks for us and i think a lot of people missed this on Saturday. We have McNulty aswell who has real quality but hasn't been given a fair crack at the whip yet, maybe there's a reason for this, who knows. We also have Murphy who might not be the best technically but his directness is brilliant to watch when he's on it.

I think he should have buried at least one of those chances, but he did make the runs in behind.I think he should have gone for power...and hitting across the keeper like he did,he would have scored..or at least got the keeper to parry it for someone folowing in.
The way he's built and his demeanour on the pitch can sometimes make him look lazy, but he's a class act for me...what about his pass into Murphy in the box first half..should have hit it first time but wasted it..he can often pick players out like that and when he plays the first time pass..he's got the ability to do that and take players out of the game...trouble is when he loses possession in deep areas like he did late on,people tend to dwell on that as he looks like it's lazy play, but he kept dropping off to get the ball off the defense and in that period he was the main reason we were keeping the ball when the ole's were ringing out.Seems like he's one of those players who will look lazy and overweight to some, but quality to others.

We have very clear rules on personal abuse. Do let me know if you would like to be reminded of them?

:)I love double insults. Its like you're so angry, one is not sufficient. Never heard "tool of a moron" though. My personal favourite is shiteating shiteater.

or maybe it's because he's been recovering from an injury and not been able to train/work out at 100% yet. It's his footballing brain and not his fitness that gets him picked.

He's been looking out of shape for a while now though, how long does he need?

Thought he was immense today, in the playmaker role. Decision-making, vision and execution were excellent. He also won more tackles than anyone other than Doyle and looked sharper than I've seen him all season. He and Doyle, won the midfield and won us the match.

Good move by Cloughie to allow him the 90 minutes too - he looked across towards the bench for the last substitution and seemed justifiably relieved when he realised it was Scoogs rather than him.

I agree with everything you say about Baxter's game today. But me being a little pedantic, he was substituted near the end and replaced by Keiron Wallace. :)

Well spotted! Thought he was great for 85 mins :)
