But it would not be Sheffield United.
We have chosen United above other local clubs, and we have done that for a variety of reasons. It maybe because the rest of your family supports United, or because they were the first side you saw live, or because you were particularly mesmerised by the star players of the time (be that Hagan, Jones, Currie, Woodward, Edwards, Deane, Whitehouse, Brown, Beattie etc), or because you were rebellious and didn't want to support the establishment team, or because you like the underdog, etc etc. It can even be as simple as you like red and white stripes better than blue and white stripes. Sometimes its's a combination of things. But none of those things would be there to attach you to a merged club.
Quite simply the merged club would not be the club any of us (or even Wedneday supporters) have chosen to support. To a greater or lesser extent we all acquaint ourselves with our club's history and we all have old 'war stories' to tell about what we have seen or done in following our club.
But all of that is what attaches us to United. Not Sheffield City, Sheffield Rovers, or Sheffield anything else. Because the new club would not be United. It would not play at Bramall Lane and none of our history to date would attach to it.
The fact is that the Sheffield area has an ample population to support two football clubs (and probably more). The fact success appears illusive is more down to the way the clubs have been run than anything else.
