  • Contrary to his beloved 4-4-2, geese Nige played a formation I still haven't figured out, 3-3-2-2? 3-1-2-2-2?. Throw in the goalie as Nigel is sometimes wont to do and its more of a bingo card than a formation.
  • If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, does Dean Hammond still get a yellow card?
  • Che Adams is a teen wolf, fear him.
  • Chris Basham is right at home in defence - send him over the half way line on the ball and he gets flustered and dizzy.
  • If we make the playoffs, Billy Sharp deserves the keys to the city, and a go on everyone's collective wife.
  • Florent Cuvelier is a tiny man with the shoulders of a giant, they are so broad his shirt must have extra stripes on it.
  • We have more police by our ground than Port Vale have fans

Can somebody confirm how we lined up?

I thought the kit looked good
3-5-2 5-3-2 someone suggested this last week - seemed fanciful and unplayable with current personnel
SJ's post with inclusion of wingbacks showed this is what we were playing
drawing them on and countering is very nervy for the crowd, but maybe we're more in control than it look
Need to make more of our chances - a constant theme all season
plenty of good individual performances today Edgar was one
great goal
Reed knocked off the ball a few times - needs to improve this side of his game, but keep him on the pitch and in the team and this will come hopefully
McEveley looked very good
if we can get in the play-offs we might stand a chance
good we have players who are so flexible in the systems we play
now teams know we can play this system they will adapt
overall a very good response to Tuesday

It was 3:5:2 and 5:3:2 all rolled in to one.

Woolford was poor.
Hammond a bit better than poor. But at least Adkins dragged him !
Where has the real Ryan Flynn gone ?
Ditto Beard ?
Reed is far too lightweight to be playing a key central midfield position.
Edgar and Bash looks like its the future at CB.
Sharp and Adams look like they have at least some sort of understanding.
Long & McEv did their jobs.

Onwards !!

Thought Long's red goalie kit looks a bit like pajamas, looking at their beardy keeper wearing green did however trigger my Steve Simonson PTSD.

Positives:

Basham at right sided centre half looked good and that could easily be his best position.

Cuvelier showed flashes of technical ability we're not used to seeing.

Negatives:

We're garbage.

And why play Flynn left centre midfield and not right centre? It would make far more sense to get him over to the right near Brayford to offer a threat out wide when we've got the ball. As it was we had no wide threat, not only due to Flynn playing where he did but because Adams stayed central too.

I am not a fan of 3-5-2, certainly in the none sweeper model English teams use, for many reasons not least being that with a conservative mind set we seem to have it easily falls back into being a 5-3-2.

Also its defensive weaknesses are self evident if the wing backs do get forward as instructed the three centre backs have to be very good players and marshalled by a very very good lynch pin centre back.

The only time I have seen it work well was when Hoddle used it as England manager, with a lynch pin of Tony Adams at the top of his game.

Basham was fantastic, the other 2 were solid as well. Whether we were good defensively or they were terrible attacking is up to debate but they were very much at arms length (save for a few half decent deliveries they put in).

I thought pre game Today was going to be interesting to see what sheff utd would turn up, is it the pedestrian boring Wigan & Bury or the positive, pacey team v donny. Thankfully the Doncaster team turned up because I dont think I couldve taken a another 90 mins like wigan

Good display particularly 2nd half reed & Adams was brilliant such a high work rate , finally saw some aggression & more attacking intent. Players willing to get in behind. Billy Sharp fantastic finish top corner but then i cant get carried away because its dejavu from last Saturday. Beat donny were I felt positive about same things thinking it was a watershed moment & Bury happened on Tues were back to square 1 post Wigan

My thoughts from the Port Vale game:

  • Who would win in a fight between Chris Morgan and Billy Whitehurst?
  • I've got an itch under my ball sack that I can't really scratch, maybe if I shuffle in my seat a bit it'll go away.
  • Got to meet the ex tomorrow to get my stuff back, fuck knows why she can't just chuck it in a skip like I asked.
  • Fucking hell this referee is garbage, even by 3rd division standards.
  • This coffee is weak as piss.
  • Woo we've scored, took it well too.
  • Creme eggs are getting smaller these days, what a rip-off.
  • Are any of these cunts ever going to stop standing still like fucking Subbuteo figures every time we get a throw-in?
  • Well I've seen worse performances, I've seen many, many better ones too.
  • I might get a beard comb tomorrow, it's getting long now.

Reminds me of when we had paul mcgrath

Good point, when Mcgraths knees packed in around late Autumn it all began to unravel we started that seaon playing some of the best football seen in a generation and ended it lumping long balls to Gareth Taylor.
He was class i used to spend entire games just watching him.in awestruck wonder at how he used to know 5 passes earlier where the ball was going to be

Can somebody confirm how we lined up?

.............................Long
...........Basham.....Edgar......McEveley
..............................Reed
Brayford.......Hammond..Flynn........Woolford
......................Adams......Sharp

Basham was magnificent - strong and resolute in defence, positive in possession. Whereas he looks like an average Div 3 midfielder, he looks very accomplished in central defence and provides much needed pace in that area.

Edgar and McEevely were solid, though Mc made his customary glitch when giving the ball away in the defensive third, which almost cost us.

Reed annoyed the extra space, playing deeper. He misplaced a few passes but that was largely as a result of trying to pass forward and with tempo. He has his limitations defensively but still offers more than Baxter in tracking back and general mobility. We saw glimpses of the player we thought we'd discovered two years ago.

Adams and Sharp linked well - movement generally was the best it's been in a while and Adams ran himself to a standstill.

Hammond was poor in possession - though he did set up Sharp's goal. He does provide discipline to midfield and protection to the central defenders and his substitution once again correlated with the opposition getting more good possession in and around our box.

Given the personnel available, I thought the system worked well. We created enough in the first half to have put the game to rest and then stepped up another gear with the confidence gained from actually scoring first at home.

The work ethic of the entire team was also noteworthy - not often that's been the case this season.

I shall enjoy my beer tonight.
I shall wonder if we can win the next three or four games as well.
I shall not be miserable.
I will consider which is funnier TD's post up thread or dog shit on the carpet.

Florent Cuvelier is a tiny man with the shoulders of a giant, they are so broad his shirt must have extra stripes on it.
According to wikipedia he's 1.83 or 6 foot in old money - can that be right?

he looks smaller.

he's also only 23, so may have a decent career yet

I thought he did OK today, good on the ball, played the required role as Hammond's replacement

Well I hope it didn't offend those delicate sensibilities too much. Stock up on Ventolin just in case.

For the record, I won't be considering you at all.

Guess so, maybe his colossal suit sized shoulders made him look a bit littler
