After selling our centre half speed merchant, losing his replacement to injury and being forced to play another bloke who's played a couple of games in a year or so, this week will tell us everything about United's financial shape and ambition.
Sadly, signing Fortune indicates the money from Killa will be banked but we aren't going to be competitive without proper reinforcements.
I didn't go yesterday but saw the goals and the defending was embarrassing - and Bunn didn't cover himself in glory for either as well.
If we're serious, we'll do some proper business this week. We'll see.

Just remind me how long you have been following United :D

Who's to say there are (m)any worthwhile centre-backs out there within our budget?

If there are we'd have been looking at them anyway. So all that's changed is a slight weakening in our bargaining position.

:(

totally agree in that we need to look at spending some of the money on a good replacement or look at bringing a young player through ranks again and see what happens.

Hey, I'm only going on Blackie's suggestion that transfers depended on what was happening with Killa.
I'm the first to acknowledge that we're not always told the entire truth but trying to scuffle by with the likes of Fortune will be illuminating.
We've already had directors dipping into their pockets to supplement the cash flow and if we are deep in financial shite that's fair enough but it's better to be told.

I'd hope it indicates that we knew we'd have no one else in by yesterdays match and therefore was a good idea, given that we'd have had to play someone else out of position yesterday.

Does that one constitute forward planning? :D

Hopefully we have a target in mind who we are capable of signing before Monday at noon.

My prediction - Andrew Davies brought back in on loan. I hope we would look at someone a bit better than him, but he is in my opinion the most likely person to be brought in

At a slight tangent but what has happened to Naysmith? He seems to appear on the bench and disappears just as quickly.

Len, the picture isn't clear on the financial side (exactly how bad it is). We bought Yeates before selling Kilgallon. If things were that bad surely the order of those events would have been reversed?

And I'm not keen on people talking about ambition. To me that just means wanting to spend someone else's money, or wanting directors to take gambles greater than they deem prudent.

Have to agree Len. I heard that Seip is out for 6 weeks so it is really important to bring someone in. There's a huge question makr over the fitness and ability (and I'm being diplomtaic here) of Jonathan Fortune.

The selling of Kilgallon might just cost us a play off place. I've been thinking of late that we'll finish somewhere between 4th and 10th. I think if we'd have kept Kilgallon it would have been closer to 4th. Still I think it was the right decision to sell him and having the solid looking Seip as back up gave some solice. I then started to think that we might creep in the play offs if Seip and Morgs stay fit, don't get suspended. Now, it's all up in the air.

The left back spot is becoming a real problem. Look at the difference it made when Kalio stepped in and sured it up. With a strong defender such as Seip or Killa next to Taylor it's just about ok. I noticed Seip shouting at Taylor about his positioning against QPR in the cup. Also Killa mopped up for Taylor a lot. So what do we do? Can we rely on Naysmith? I thought he'd be back by now, but maybe it'll take him another month til he gets match fit. Despite signing Stewart (again who i'm nnot impressed by as a LB) KB refuses to play him (apart from on the wing). Is it an option to bring Kalio back? What about this Sweedish defender who plays for Wigan? I know little about him, but he seems keen to join us.

He's had a couple of set backs.

How related they are to rumours about him being moved off the wage bill, I don't know...

But he's not had the fastest injuries to come back from.

We know Kev McCabe has put his hand in his pocket on several occasions for big sums, but are you referring to the small directors loans c.£10k that were made by Jason Rocket and others? If so, are you really suggesting that this is anything other than a token gesture, or perhaps a way of repaying them with interest as tax avoidance..? Surely, with our wagebill, about £30k wouldn't go far, which in turn suggests that (as it has only been reported once) that this is not really to do with shoring up a failing cashflow at all...

As I understand it, he and Jags had the same op on the same day last year - Jags still isn't near a return for Everton (hasn't even got to the stage where he can be named on the bench), and he's much younger.

They did indeed :)

If we let all these players go and still aren't capable of signing anything else than loans and out of contract players, it seems obvious to me that we are still spending far too much on wages.

Maybe we should keep in mind that re-signing the likes of Fortune, Kenny, Morgan, Quinn, Monty, Naysmith, Geary, Harper (all experienced players, likely to demand top Championship wages), will be the PRECISE reason why we won't be making (m)any quality additions in this window, and possibly the next.

As one who looked forward to the return of the excellent Gary Naysmith, I too have been dismayed to see him appear to be on the cusp of 1st team action only to dissolve into thin air.
Speaking to someone within the club and putting forward my theory that GS is not being played for some financial reason and we are desperate to unload because of his high salary, I was told my theory was pretty near the mark....:

Its simple............... no new owners/investors no serious investment in players.

McCabe has had enuff.

More interesting will McCabe continue to liquidate an sell Ward ?

Do we pay Everton extra on appearances? Players have been dumped in the reserves for exactly that reason at other clubs...

It's a shame he got injured as we might have got some cash off Brum in the summer. As it is we've paid out thousands a week just to mend him.

I really don't know JD, it just seemes very strange that he's been on the bench the odd time and was certainly put through what looked like a rigorous fitness test at QPR before the league game (we all thought he was sure to start and wasn't even on the bench!).
It just got me thinking if there was some appearance clause in his contract or some trigger point for payment. I put this to someone who would definitely know about this and they answered me sheepishly and as much as said 'yes' without actually saying it.
It's painful to see Taylor woefully exposed as a limited option when we have a player of Naysmith's class on the payroll.....

Presumably what hasn't helped is that we haven't had a reserve game for nearly 2 months, which would have been the ideal way to improve his fitness.

We need him back in, though presumably even when he's fit enough to play 90 minutes it'll still be a while till he's properly match fit. Geary might be a better option to play in the meantime.

It's entirely about cashflow Dunc. I suspect transfers out since then have helped find the £4.5m needed but we've clearly been struggling for cash.

A week ago you had multi-millions coming into the club - has it gone away again?

I'm glad its plainly obvious to you Len, because it appears to have escaped me.

Now I know a thing or six about juggling a cashflow, and I can't see such a small sum as being significant. Sheffield United has cash outgoings in excess of £100,000 each working day, on average. Why would a single hit of £30k help with this, or indeed with the £4.5m that we were supposed (by students of the accounts) to produce anytime soon?

The need to find £4.5 million may be clearer to see, but a cashflow crisis that had Directors chucking in comparative small change? Come on. I do think you are gilding the funerial lilies on this one Len...

I imagine Len is talking about the £6,227,000 loaned by Scarborough (interest 8%) on 29 June 2009 and the £2,500,000 (LIBOR plus 4%) also from Scarborough on 12 March 2009. Or what about the £2,000,000 from Scarborough on 10 October 2008 (LIBOR plus 4%)? Or was it the £1,487,463 from McCAbe (10%) on 28 January 2009?

Or was it the £2,200,000 'of new loan notes from various non-executive directors and associates.?

Or was it the £400,000 from D Green at 4% plus LIBOR?

You tell me Duncs.

either that or going more than £50M into debt.

It is cashflow, pure and simple. We needed the money - I can't even see why that's difficult to grasp when we've got to find £4.5m before we start at zero in the current financial year.

Doesn't matter if we sign a replacement for Killa or not with Blackwell in charge.

I'm happy to just bank the money, get the finances in order and wait until he eventually gets the boot.

Welcome to the wilderness years.

I'm not really bothered if we find a replacement or not this week, Walker can play there if necessary ;) :fishy:

More concerned about beating Reading on Tuesday night
