I've watched United since 1956 and this is the 23rd new manager appointed in that time.

Am I excited? YES. Have I big expectations? YES.

Amongst those 23 new managers few excited me and indeed a number of the appointments offended me. Less than a handful of them actually excited me, though I hadn't a clue who the likes of Ken Furphy, Harry Haslam and Arthur Rowley were. In fact, thinking about it none of the 21 previous appointments excited me so the new owner has at least achieved something with these last two, maybe more to do with our low base than anything else I suppose.

We have appointed some managers who seemed destined to fail. This new one stands an even chance of putting something together IMO. As always I'll give it a year before I make my mind up though, especially after waxing lyrical about Clough in his early days.. It's not all about that initial honeymoon period, it's about years 2 and 3 which matter. That's not to say Year 1 is not vitally important because it's so very hard to recover from a bad start.

The best scenario is Premier League in say 4 years. The worst is needing to appoint another new manager within a couple of years and Wednesday doing well at the same time; Wednesday have taken the pressure off our owners in recent times but who knows what they will do now? None of us know what's in store that's a fact. I hope beyond hope that our new owner is excited in a year's time, we are all in his hands, whoever he is and whatever he's got!

This is my 5th season in L1.

I have witnessed 3 relegations and 3 promotions.

I remember 1 promotion and 3 relegations.

How old am I? (Without looking at my profile)

I've lived in four different decades but only witnessed one promotion and two relegations.

My Dad watched them for 20 years before he took me to Bramall Lane. In all those 79 years there has been so little success, certainly minimal success for a club with our support.

I know that's not the point, or if it is, then it doesn't bear thinking about.

One day it will all come together; we'll get the "Ultimate Superhero" who will take us out of the doldrums. Maybe Adkins will be that man and maybe in say 4 years time we will be where Leicester are now and kick on from there. It can happen.

I'd love a few trips with United into Europe!!:)

1936 FA Cup final. Who was your dad's favourite player? Jock Dodds? Jack Pickering? Jimmy Hagan?

Jimmy Hagan my Dad's No.1 ever. Spoke about Jock Dodds a lot. Never mentioned Jack Pickering.

He did go to the 1936 Cup Final I believe, how I wish I had quizzed and quizzed him on it.

My dad watched the Blades from the war years until his death in 1999 and his favourite player was Jimmy Hagan too but his favourite era was Currie & Woody era

I do look better with out my glasses, because I'm short sighted...;)

SK10blade,
Not checked this out but I don't think we've ever been out right champions of this division have we ?

Won division 4 in 1981-82 and thats it during my lifetime. But once a Blade always a Blade. Happy to say my Daughter who lives in Abu Dhabi is also an avid Blade and my Mum has a cat called Hagan

I started in 1964/65 and there have been quite a few managers I have been excited about on their appointment Furphy, Porterfield, Bassett, Bruce, Kendall, Warnock spring immediately to mind. Maybe Haslam too.

The rest have been generally met with an optimistic OK, let's hope it works. Including Clough and Adkins.

At the other end of the spectrum, the oh Sweet Jesus Christ no ! response from me is reserved for just 2, Steve Thompson and Bryan Robson. I'm writing it now and I still can't believe that chuff Robson was appointed. Worst decision ever? Go on, someone start a thread, 'worst decision ever'. Or has it already been done? Kev what were you doing?

Of the ones who I happen to have met, just at meet the manager do's open days etc: Bruce, Russell Slade, Bassett, Wilson and Warnock impressed. Sirrell, I simply couldn't understand a word he said, the mad bastard and Kendall was supercilious or drunk. Adrian Heath and Billy Mc Ewan seemed genuine but bemused. Blackwell was very open and friendly. I just shouted at Robson- he didn't respond.

Good summary IMO. Thought Heath was snidy though. Spoke to him at a meet the fans do when rumours were Kendall was leaving. Heath said he would see the job through whatever and quickly jumped ship. Aidy Littlejohn should have punched him a lot harder. As an aside, Busbys main job seemed to be keeping HK's soft drink topped up with "additives".
Spoke to Robson after one away game as the players were boarding the coach. Could hardly stand up. Much the same after the Pigs game when Kilgallon was sent off. Even Turry was embarrassed.
Basset had a dark side though when things weren't going his way. Mind you, look at who he had to work with!

After saying that about Kendall he gave us some good times. Paul McGrath being the standout. What could he have been injury free and teetotal. Still one of the best players I've seen wear a Blades shirt even if it was for only thirteen or so games.

I'm living in the 5th different decade that I have lived in

I can remember 20 different managers in charge at the lane.

In my lifetime I have lived through 5 promotions and 5 delegations and can remember 4 promotions and 4 relegations.
