Rotterdam or anywhere isn't very specific...

I'm not sure what this thread means.

Reminds me of when Americans talk about going to "Europe" on vacation.

Be more specific. Do you mean Barcelona or Mexborough?

I was in a taxi once, in Los Angeles, the taxi driver hears my voice and says

"so, you're from the land down under huh?"

"no mate, I'm British"

"oh really? huh, what part of London are you from?"

"I'm from Sheffield mate"

"is that central London?, near the famous West End"

"yes mate, that's right......"

I was in a taxi once in Rotterdam. I said to the driver

"to the train station please"

he replied in a North African accent " you English"

"Yes" was my reply.

He drove me to the train station.

I could've also had this conversation anywhere, but i imagine that the conversation in Liverpool would've been more friendly.

Sounds like a perfect journey to me. Better than listening to some scouser going on about King Kenny.

In fairness, i didn't get ripped off in Rotterdam.

Den Haag, Amsterdam and Frankfurt - all ripped off with taxis on first trip there

I was once in a taxi near the Metro centre in Gateshead, heading for the Malmaison Hotel, and I could hardly understand the taxi driver, strongest accent I have ever come across in this country

Amsterdam is a bit fucked up though with circular roads and one ways. You have to drive probably twice the as the crow flies distance to get anywhere. It's not really cab friendly.

Full on Geordie is like a foreign language.

I was in a taxi from Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris last year, Tax driver started going the wrong way around the peripherique, so I said "speak English"? he said yes, so I said, "can we go in the other direction?", he just nodded and turned around.

Since then they have made it a fixed fare from the airport, to stop the relentless ripping off or tourists

As BushBlade said, some of the cities aren't that friendly to cars, but when you see that they've blatently taken the piss it doesn't give them a good name. You normally only realise this at the end of the trip when you take the taxi back from the hotel to the train station/ airport and they go the direct route for half the price!

Over the years i've learnt to ask them "which way will you go to x Hotel" and it normally gets them thinking you've been there before.

I don't like Uber as i've had some shit experiences with them, but I had it with an Uber in Dubai where the driver missed the exit and it was about 15km longer. The driver apologised and i took it as a genuine error, until i realised i'd been charged. In fairness i contacted them and they refunded it back to the most direct route.

Taxi from Los Angeles Airport to Hotel in Hollywood about $60-$70

Uber doing the same journey $27

Not had any bad trips with Uber so far. Can the driver (your driver in Dubai) stop the app/meter when making a mistake? I assume so.

Uber drivers in Paris never mess about, always taken me fastest route (so far). USA the same, I assume because they have an abundance of drivers, they don't want the bad ratings

No, an Uber driver can't change anything, but he can request that the charge is reduced to the customer if he realises he's made a mistake/overcharged/gone the long way round. Yours, it would seem, chose not to. ;) Gives a bad name to other honest taxi drivers.
