Them and Us

Are we all sure Clough rated Coady and actually wanted to sign him? He was a Weir signing and took a while to break into Clough's team as I recall, though he became a regular.

When United approached Liverpool weren't we told the fee was £1m plus? Did Clough want him at that price? By the time the price had dropped hadn't we moved on? Didn't Clough always want Coutts and Co? That summer Clough made a good few signings and we did end up with no end of midfielders anyway.
No reason why he wouldn't, he was English and white.

I think it's very much a 'them and us' scenario.

The way they go about things, I certainly don't want any responsibility for any of it.

It's why we're in this mess, and our decline will continue if the board proceed without making wholesale, and widespread changes to the operations they're involved in, and the personnel they use to carry it out.

I don't think we got as far as putting in a bid for Coady - as I remember it we enquired, got told it was £1m and we left it there. Huddersfield put a cheeky bid in and got him. Whether he would have come I don't know but we had bought Sicknote Wallace by then. What about appointing Marvin Haggler as negotiator ??:p

I know this one is tough for you WWF but if you were Coady would you go to Third division Sheffield United or Second Division (and still second division) Huddersfield Town? You never know perhaps the player went "naa, this lot are paying me more and I'm playing at a higher level". We don't really know because this stuff isn't ever disclosed.

Perhaps the lack of Angolan second string strikers put him off, we will never know.

It wasn't a response to your post, but it won't make a blind bit of difference. It is more fundamental than "visible presence" will solve. Leadership on the pitch would be a start. No one in the boardroom can change that. What will change things is if we stop selling our best players and replacing them with dross.

I would suggest that having an owner who is in and around the club on a weekly basis is a better position to be in than the one we are in. Especially given the fact that the person he has for "eyes and ears" doesn't seem to understand football and his "partner" is not interested.

Agree on the leaders thing but unfortunately our board have now conditioned us in to accepting that we are a selling club so hey ho let's all just role over and have our tummies tickled.

Not quite.
We want promotion, success and a team to be proud of.
They want a return on their investment and profit.
This would be a byproduct of what we want.

thats not really true
anyone who invests in football expecting to get dividends and profits deluded
the only way to become a millionaire director at football is to start as a billionaire

profit making in league one is on a par with running the Rolf Harris fan club and hoping to make a profi

Ken Bates did it.

Ken Bates did it.
He made money on the land deals , at london prices , that hotel is worth 100 times what ours is
due to the phone numbers the estate agents use as prices

had he built it in Sheffield hed be penny less

did you miss the bit
"profit making in league one"
bates has never made a profit there in fact at Leeds he blew what he made

As far as I remember Leeds made a profit when in L1.

He made a big loss at Chelsea, which isn't what I was referring to because I didn't miss the bit about making profit in league one.

I dunno, I was a bit pro board and positive about the rebuilding of our great club, but it seems that the only place they won't invest in real quality appears to be on the pitch, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that we needed to keep macdonald, who was sold as the prince arrived, just in time for the transfer window to close, was there a hint there of the game changing investment being bullshit?

Then maguire, and the failure to sign coady, which we could all se that regardless of him being a brilliant signing we could only ever make money on the deal, the only way we wouldnt have made money on coady was if we'd have gone up with him in the team and I'm sure that would be fine with the fans, then later on the sales again with Murphy, and I'm starting to wonder what's going on, you can't sell key players, man Utd still haven't got over Ronaldo leaving, you can't sell your best players, and if that means paying a bit more to keep em happy, then do it.... Btw, why wouldn't you want all those players who went on that league and cup run in your team, if you were serious at going up and you could sign coady, having seen how him scougs,Murphy, and the beard clicked in that run in, you'd be looking at the way out of league one in style, why didn't we pay the 500.000 when we could have?? And we could have too...

But, here's where the argument hits the skids, because Buffoon or not, clough was backed with around five million pounds by the board in league one, a huge amount, forget that he pretty much wasted it all except for Brayford, (who we weren't desperate for as far as player wise) and also done who was a good one, but at least he was backed, then onto Adkins who also has made decent (on paper) signings from the championship, and Hammond from the premier, not too shabby for league one..

In conclusion, I'm really confused and unsure who to lash out at for our failings so I'm gonna suck it up and stick it out with Adkins up until the board make a scapegoat of him, you know they will if results don't change, and quickly... que sera sera...

On a footnote, I got told that Adkins had the players Sussed very early on, but he's got to work with them till they can be released/ transferred...

I believe Adkins will get it right, but I also believe he could be gone before January if we don't halt the slide.... In conclusion, were a club, team and fanbase totally confused at the moment, I'm not on any side...

Good post Tezza. Very few, if any managers would achieve, with the dross we are left with. That said, the Board should back Adkins immediately instead of watching the clock tick down
until a promotion challenge becomes unrealistic.. IMO he could work with the present lot until the Christmas after next without result.

I cant understand why the Board appear to place so much importance in the January transfer window. Come on now, who will take the players we have for free even. Perhaps a Conference team or two if we continued paying their extortionate wages.

If the Board want promotion, if as they claim, we are all in it together, Now is the time to really shake things up before it is too late.

Far too many chiefs and not enough indians down at Bramall lane, we have a board for the football club then we have another company with a very similar name, then a company called blades leisure or whatever it is called this month, then a company called after a seaside town all run by McCabe and his cronies. Add to that the other half of the ownership is stuck in Saudi Arabia who along with his American mouth piece know next to fuck all football so how the fuck can we expect them to run SUFC from afar with any level of success. I'd be surprised if any of them know what the others are doing or which particular bit or offshoot of the club they are working for, do they pass in the corridor under the south stand and wonder who the fuck was that who just said good morning ? We have one constant over the years of our decline and it ain't the manager the sooner one half owner sells up and fucks off the better.

Another good post. Hurrah!

It's funny, someone tweeted a series of squad photos from the late 60s / early 70s and it struck me for how long TC didn't look like the iconic TC we all have in our minds-eye. Hopefully somebody ( Darren ) can tell me one way or another, but was that because he had a few seasons before his peak where he perhaps wasn't as brilliant as he is remembered? Fast-forward 40 years and look at Che Adams - fans demanding consistency from him and criticising his lack thereof. Patience and faith!

TC hit the ground running. He was strong and had a football brain and from day one he ran the show. In my minds eye I can see him bearing down on the kop goal, arms raised high waving to the crowd.
IBrilliant from the start IMO

You're right , we don't know, but it might not be the Board's fault;)

This suggestion that the owner needs to be there "at the ground" is a bit 50'/ 60's I suggest. Quaint it is but not how the world is these days , in any walk of life.

Over the years we have paid kings' ransoms to various so-called Chief Executives to carry out the owners' strategies. Wasn't Birch on £500k p.annum?

TC did make a great impression on his debut but fact is he was a slightly podgy, red-faced 18 year old and didn't look the part until he developed his own image which was spectacularly stylish and "of those times", an iconic figure in our circles anyway.

Anyone who saw curries debut against Spurs new we had a special player he had this fantastic ability to show the ball to the opposition
Who respected his ability to keep it .I can still recall him having the ball near the old John St terrace without touching it his body language
Was saying come and get it if you can ,he had an aura about him even at that tender age, remarkable !!I feel privileged to have seen him in
his pomp. TC and G Best are the two greatest players I have had the privilege to see play,I would have loved to have seen Jimmy Hagan in
his prime (my dad's football idol)but he was in is fading years when I started supporting the blades.
Adams could become a decent player if he keeps working at his game but he hasn't got the gifts TC had

Che Adams and TC shouldn't be mentioned in the same paragraph.

'The important thing is that JP had identified that there were problems on and off the pitch' Genius. Really, there's a problem, a blindfolded Monkey would have reached the same conclusion and to date come up with a better set of solutions to the 'problems'. The management of the club is rotten from the top down. Mr Phipps is a good chap, but way out of his depth. He is the 'representative' of the Prince, so does he really make any decision?, if he does they have a common theme, they are appalling.

Appointing Adkins was appalling?

As 'quaint' as the idea may be.... I firmly believe that a chairman who is in and around the club on a weekly basis (not every day) is better placed for decision making.

The only possible exception is if he has an advisor of a real footballing background with the know how to go with it.

We have neither.

It's entirely 100% true.
Anyone who thinks they are in it for the love of Sheffield United is completely deluded.
I didn't say they would make profit in league one either.
