IF Tony Currie had spent his entire career with us then he would have been the first to deserve this.

He went to Leeds to better himself no doubt financially as well as career wise.

If you are naming the stand after Currie then Joe Shaw, Jimmy Hagan, Alan Hodgkinson and Alan Woodward should have a similar fitting accolade.

Currie brought much joy to many but in the recent history he is not the most deserving in my opinion.

Heresy though this will be to some - I totally agree with you.

TC had two things over and above any player I've seen play for United - skill and charisma. His ability to dribble the ball and hit precise 70 yard passes to completely change a game is beyond any other player I've seen. And on top of that he was a tremendous showman and crowd-pleaser. Those two things make him very special and in many people's eyes, the greatest Sheffield United player of all time. However, he wasn't my favourite player. At times he would look very lazy and disinterested, he had this special talent, but he didn't put it to work every week. (I think Woodward made a far more valuable contribution to that excellent 1970's team, he was consistently good, game after game, season after season).

I don't know how much say TC had in his transfer to Leeds, but I remember that day very well. It was seen as the ultimate betrayal. I remember seeing graffiti daubed on the walls of the ground protesting at this sale. I remember hearing of people ripping up their season tickets and vowing never to go and watch United again. TC would have got a share of the £250,000 transfer fee and would have no doubt been offered higher wages. Yet roll forward a few years, after the end of his playing career, and he was allegedly broke. The club arranged a testimonial for him - the match attracted the biggest crowd of that season - 18,000 turned up to watch it. TC reportedly pocketed £25k from that - which, is the equivalent of about £70k in today's money. Within a few weeks of that he was back in the doldrums again. Rumours were that he'd pissed all that money up against the wall. According to his own account, TC spent "six months messing about" after that testimonial and was "in a bad way at 33". He was back living with his mum. Sheffield United Football Club came to his rescue again and offered him a job as Community Football Officer - a job he still has today.

Sheffield United Football Club have given TC a platform for his skills as an unknown 18 year old from Watford FC. They made him the great player that he was. He upped and left the club at his prime to sign for a bitter local rival. He finishes playing and is on his arse and the club arrange a money-spinning testimonial to help him out. Then, when he's spunked that money and is down on his arse again they give him a job for life.

Joe Shaw has his piece of history, with the statue outside of the ground. I think that's entirely fitting and appropriate. Hagan, Hodgkinson and Woodward are all deserving of some recognition, all were outstanding players and good servants to the club. I think the club has done enough, more than enough, for TC over the years and he isn't deserving of having a stand named after him, over and above the others in your list.

And it seems a strange thing to do, at this point in time, in any case. Another "McCabism" no doubt.

Is there any truth in the rumour that it was the TC sale that went some way to pay for the South
Stand? And that the lack of player investment to pay for the reminder of the Stand led us to the 4 th Division?

If so, there’s a certain irony that we went from one spot away from Europe, sold our best player, built a Stand, got relegated and then named the stand after the player...

Personally The Deane and Agana Stand, the 2-4 Duffy Stand, the Alex Sabella Stand, The Shred Kop, and in pencil and in readiness the Sir Chris Wilder Stand are all considerations.

The naming/unveiling & the Inter friendly. Hopefully we'll also get a commemorative programme or t-shirt or half/half scarf and fly pele over for the night. Nobody does 'bread & circuses' as good as us. :)
 
What a fucking travesty that this happens AFTER the inspired and unforgettable (or is that unforgivable) naming of the Dame Maddam Jessica Ennis stand ?!!

Great, i get sick of the club constantly changing names of stands for sponsors, i lose track. Its always the kop, john street, south stand and bramall lane end. But iam happy to call it the tony currie stand.
