August 1980 and I went to my first United game against Chesterfield, Abba's 'Winner Takes It All' was number one.
Abba proved to be incorrect ; United were the winners on that Tuesday night game, but instead of 'taking it all' we ended up being relegated in the last minute of the season to the fourth division. Never trust Abba's lyrics was the lesson I learnt there.

Went to Leadmill that night to see Thousand Yard Stare, (tee shirts used to say Thousand Yard Who?). Funnily enough they had a song called "0-0 aet" about argueing. Great night that was.

We were 2-0 up and then Orient scored 3 in a row. I remember a bloke behind me on the Kop saying, "Fuck off, United"
Then the last 20 minutes saw an Edwards and Morris masterclass and we blew them away.

I remember a woman proposed to her partner at halftime on the pitch because it was Leap Year Day. Don't know if they are still together!

Recently discovered my first ever match was at the rust bucket, a 2-2 draw in the reserves. 31 August 1988. I don't remember as I was only 3... Wilder played and Carl Bradshaw played and scored for them!
Most importantly, the number one single was....Yazz- The only way is up.

Scott on his full debut I think. Another along with Rogers that we’d thrown into top level football straight from non-league. It was a demolition – we fell asleep for those last two, the scoreline was very generous for Chelsea.

Foot tapper the Shadows was number 1. I actually went to an away game before my Dad took me to the Lane for a first team game although I’d been to a few reserve home games with him earlier.

It was March 1963, an FA cup game against Port Vale at Vale Park. We won 2-1, Doc Pace scored and Foot Tapper was playing over the tannoy at half time. Oddly enough I’ve been a regular visitor to Vale Park over the years sometimes even when we weren’t playing the Vale, as one of my brother in-laws and his family are lifelong fans (Poor sods).

For the record, I’ve always loved this tune for the memories it bring back. We were doing well in the top tier that season and I was well and truly hooked as a Blade even before I started going regularly. Happy daze. UTB
