I'd love us to be known for:
  • Aggressive closing down when out of possession (we seem to wait for a mistake rather than forcing one)
  • Winning the ball back high up the pitch (which we hardly ever do)
  • Attacking full backs (we do have this already tbf)
  • Overlapping wing play (remember that?)
  • Loads of crosses - assuming someone's actually in the f\/cking box (see below)
  • Shoot on site - be greedy FFS!
  • Attacking in numbers - the amount of time I've seen us put crosses into a penalty with no players there this and lest season drives me mad!
  • Pace in the key areas (wide & up front)
  • Intelligent use of the long ball (it's not a crime)
Imagine the crowd if we played like this. Bramall Lane would be rocking again.

Appreciate it's not as simple as saying "lets just do all these things" and all of a sudden we'll be top of the league.

Just want to see a bit more umph from us.

We need the right players with the right attitude first.

Agree with most. But to add....

...getting to the bye line and crossing.

.....being creative and effective with our set pieces.

Finally you say it won't be easy. I don't see why not. These alterations could be achieved in a matter of weeks if we so wished. Remember it's a simple game.

Allelujah, brother. Football is so up-its-arse these days, they've forgotten it is meant to be entertainment. Entertainment paid for by us, I might add.

We don't seem to pay much attention to what's required in the final third.

Jimbo talked the other week about the need for the club to enshrine a footballing identity that goes above & beyond individual managers' preferred styles, & which gets passed on from manager to manager (which, tbh, would be the entire opposite of our modus operandi over recent years).

Could we ever realistically agree on such a thing across the fan base though, given the evident long-standing split between those who want a modern footballing ethos & those who want a return to something approaching long-ball?

O/P makes a good fist of it, to be fair. I'd add in a general commitment to attacking football too.

Good first post, welcome.

I'm sure Adkins would write a very similar O.P. and explain that he took over a squad which had been coached, indeed assembled, with a different philosophy.

Personally I'm not entirely convinced with this "pressing high upfield" latest fashion. A season is a long time, as is a 90 minute game, and players are not machines that can churn out such high-intensity twice a week forever. I'd settle for removing all space for the opposition in our own half.

I'm all for men in support of the strikers, joining him or them in the box by the time the ball gets there. Billy Sharp is starved of support week in week out; may as well not play him if we can't play to his strengths.

We have the full backs to overlap but haven't played like that since Brayford's first spell here.

" Loads of crosses" - not that bothered. Over my 60 years watching we have only had a couple of strikers who could regularly score with headers from crosses, on the other hand it's about that second ball which we haven't picked up forever it seems. It is difficult to do that though if our central midfield never crosses the half way line and we never see a 5-man attack. Adkins started very well in this respect but not for weeks have we seen support for the strikers.

something approaching long-ball?
.
I don't think anyone wants to go back to long hopeful balls to a big lad who might win a fair percentage.

I do not see aggressive, attacking football as incompatible with passing the ball. Pass and move, close down quickly and move forward with pace.

I don't like continuous passing along the half way line, then giving the ball away. I don't like the ponderous way we move forward at times.

We are woefully short of pace still and I don't believe we pass the ball well most of the time.

Sadly, I don't think we yet have the personnel to do this - we're 12th having taken 15 points from 15 games for a reason.

We live in hope, though.

So what exactly is NA asking them to do on match days, is it just off the cuff see how we go.

I've not seen anybody suggesting we return to "long hopeful balls" but I'm all for the mixing of play with forwards who are alive to balls in the channels and beyond the back line. Yes please ( if only we could clone Deane and Agana) !!

Mix it up but regard a ball backwards as a "get out option" as a last resort; also regard a sideways ball as second or third choice and regard it as a failure of the forward receivers rather than the man in possession.

The manager has worked with much better players at higher levels. He has also succeeded at this level.

He is not a fool. what do you think he asks the players to do on match days ---- and do you think they are doing what he asks of them?

I would say they aren't doing what he wants or incapable of implementing it, so by definition that would make him a fool for allowing it.

Movement. Movement creates space and momentum. We play like statues - as if you can only move when you have got the ball. Doesn't matter what style you play if you don't have movement. Its the area we most need to improve offensively. Defensively - has anyone mentioned Centre Halves? Most good teams play with them I am told.

Can never understand why any club doesn't have a long ball option, certainly outside the PL. It's ideal for when clubs try the high press game, it just negates it. High press, high line, bang - ball over the top or flick on from big man to pacy midget.

I was reading this and thinking if we only got 2 of the requests you mentioned that would fantastic, but it made me think what have we got really.

Kevin McCabe who nobody really likes, in fact reading the posts hate him.

Abdullah bin Musa'ed bin Abdulaziz AlSaud Who‘s name is nowhere near as long as his trouser pockets, because he’s not spending any of his money he promised.

The largest assembled team ever in the history of any team in the third tier, and no doubt the largest wage bill.

A club that’s sells it best players at every opportunity.

A club that has wasted more money in the transfer market and gained no promotion.

A club that hires and fires managers, as if it has gone out of fashion.

A team that produces nothing week after week, no effort, sweat, determination, grit. I could go on for ever

A support base that lives on yesterday’s dreams, as they see no hope for the future.

A cop that used to sing like a choir of a 1,000 men and women now sings like a solo act at the club.

I could go on for ever but I hope you get the picture

But hey we did get a new pitch; we have some of the best burger vans outside any ground in Europe, and the best bit of all, I still look forward to every game and I can say that Sunday cannot come around quick enough for me.

As a new poster Toledo, good to see you are intent on concentrating on the positives!!

Oh, I'm guessing Robson, Blackwell, Speed, Adams, Wilson, Morgs, Weir, Clough and Adkins haven't thought of this.

Unfortunately we will always be known for the club that takes its supporters to the very edge..... Then blows it as well as the biggest club to win fuck all since the war!!

Hi Woodwardfan, I might be new, but it does not mean that I do not have a voice. If you feel that I am not positive enough sorry, but the truth does hurt, I suspect that the majority of Blade fans are hurting right now also. its not that I stated lies, is it? I will take on board your comment, and be more positive with a quote. To be truly positive in the eyes of some, you have to risk appearing negative in the eyes of others.”

Maybe a few suggestions and solutions other than burgers might help.
