Something that has bugged me for a long while really but the game against Bristol the other night has led me to touch upon the subject on here.
When I think of the logo of our fine club and in particular the crossed blades, whilst the resemble the infamous crossed cutlasses of pirates....I would like to think that it relates more to the fine steel producing heritage of our city. Therefore as a centrally based, British city with no real maritime connections.. I find it weird that we take our fine (Sheffield Made) crossed blades and take on a theme that has no real relevance to our club in the slightest.
I mean if truth be said you could quite easily question the design of the badge as a whole with the above in mind, however as we are able to take the "crossed swords" and relate them to our fine historical, steel producing city.....we are more than willing to accept it.
But Captain Chuffing Blade....................
What is he all about?
What relevance does he have?
I mean how many ships sailed out of Sheffield? ....The closest our fine city comes to Maritime history is the infamous destroyer HMS Sheffield!.
Captain blade has never really inspired me.....In fact I can go as far as saying that I have never really accepted him or related him to the club. He doesn't belong there and is of no relevance what so ever to Sheffield United or Sheffield ever as a whole.
I am all for having a mascot.....This is something that has been around for a very long time and truth be said it serves many a commercial purpose for a club. Therefore can we not just scrap Captain Blade who doesn't belong here!!!! And replace him with something more relevant?
In fact bring back bertie!!!!........A fine specimen of a man who represented our cities fine history of producing the finest steel on the face of the earth!.....Bring him back! Re-deign him and bring him up to date and let's have our future generations of supporters admiring something that is actually related to our club and our city!.
