The foam the refs use is probably the best idea dreamed up by the football authorities since the back pass rule was outlawed many years ago.

The problem now (as we saw at Oldham) is they seem to have a stupid way of implementing it.

Ok, ref semi circles the ball, counts out 10 paces and then ushers the players back to where his 10 paces are - none of the players appear to go the full 10 yards, so he steps back and draws the line, always missing their boots. It ends up being 9 most of the time.

Just can't see why they can't just pace out 10 yards, draw a line and say get fooking behind that you cheating nob heads.

Simple solution and would solve all of the problems.

Which is what a half-decent ref. would do without the 'shaving foam'. It really is a pathetic idea. Refs. regularly start pacing out the ten yards then bottle it. It becomes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-and-a-bit, 'fuck it, that'll do'. Spraying this ridiculous line just allows players to make the ref. look a fucking idiot.

If players (opposition players, of course) refuse to retreat the full ten yards, the ref. should spray them. In the face. With CS gas.

The other night, a Donny player - taking a corner at the kop end - had the ball outside the 'arc'. The ref. ran over. I thought he was going to 'paint' another arc with his spray!

You're assuming that 10 strides is 10 yards. Most referees seem to take 9 strides, and I'd always assumed that it's because they'd measured and found it took them 9 strides to cover roughly 10 yards - which sounds about right to me.

I think for most grown men a decent stride covers more than a yard.

To me the walls seem to be a long way back (particularly when there's a free kick on the edge of our box ) and dead balls in general are much more dangerous for this and other reasons.

That said, the ref yesterday I thought was poor and lacked authority - but generally they do a pretty decent job.

Has anyone else noticed over the last 3 or 4 games all the refs we've had have all generally seemed a bit more lenient?

Obvious hacks etc have still been given as fouls but they seem to let a lot of pushing and shoving go, particularly when contesting aerial balls.

Wonder if this is a new directive given to lower league officials?

Then any player that does not step back, he should get the foam out again and draw a giant nob at the feet of the culprit.

I think the official measure is 10 Yorkshire knob lengths.

It drives me bananas the naivety of the refs. IT IS QUITE FUCKING SIMPLE TO USE THE MARKINGS ON THE PITCH AS A GUIDE. an offence around the 18 yd box area. lets say a yard outside the 18 yard box. THEN GO TO THE 6 YARD BOX LINE AND WALK THREE FORWARD. FAR MORE LIKELY TO BE ACCURATE!!

Fuck me, most of the Refs would need a Slide Rule and Log Tables for that one

Can I just put on my anorak and point out that the foamy line should in fact be an arc of a circle and not a straight line. (I think someone might have alluded to this upthread.)

Also said arc should have fairly pronounced curvature (oo er missus). In fact it should look like an arc of the centre circle.

One day there will be a free kick given on the centre spot, the ref will foam a straight line tangential to the centre circle...and I will be quietly ridiculing him.

(Unless I've got this all wrong.)

Right !! - he will need a Slide Rule, Log Tables and a Geometry Compass to draw the Arc

I'm back to not caring again. 10 yards or not 10 yards. Foam or no foam. Meh.

All they need is a peg to stick in the grass and 30ft of string attached to the shaving foam can. Jobs a good un ;)
