A majority of Blades fans will now be resigned to not achieving promotion. To do it automatically we would need to show form, particularly at home, which we look nowhere near capable of producing. To do it in the playoffs we would need either to gain some character, magically produce some form in 3 matches, or be landed with some massive strokes of luck. None of that seems likely.
So what happens next season? Wilson, for me, and presumably many others, has to be sacked when the campaign ends in failure barring any of the above miracles. He shows trust in players that are simply not up to scratch and whilst I believe he was a good manager when he had good players, when he has to squeeze that extra level of performance he has never seemed to manage it. He has shown a baffling tendency not to try anything different in the current run of home games, and his transfer dealings (whilst his hands may have been tied to an extent) have not been good enough. He has to go.
Who to replace him? On the shoutbox I saw someone mention Steve Davis of Crewe. I like this idea a lot, if only for the simple fact he has won twice at Wembley in a single year - I want some of that. He has got a squad competing in the division above even despite losing the bigger name players of his team from the year before, which seems to suit our situation. I have not seen his team play though so this is a very ignorant suggestion and what I am really asking is who do people think is the right manager to rebuild? I think we need to show a bit more imagination and forward thinking then just saying 'Warnock' who in any case doesn't seem to be in the market for another managerial position.
Mainly, I'm writing this post just to make myself a tiny bit less monumentally f***ed off about tonight and think to the future instead.
