The Premiership - A dilemma

I suppose that the real worry is whether this is as good as is going to get for us. With CW and AK in charge and some shrewd dealing in the transfer market, I believe we can hold our own. We’ll never have a better chance

I’ve given myself a stiff talking to. The season ticket is renewed.

Bring it on
COYRAWW

SuperJags I'm the same I can't relax until Wilder goes on a diet, he's carrying far too much timber for it to be healthy!

I’m glad it’s not just me, what is Uniteds Doctor or his own GP playing at???????

And he needs a shave.

I’ve been lurking on the S2 forum for a while and on Bladesmad before that. I am a long-standing (sitting) season ticket holder in the South Stand, and my memories of The Blades go back to the golden years of the early 70s.
However I wanted to share an angst that I experienced recently for the first time when I came to renew my ST. After the success we have finally enjoyed in recent seasons, a voice was whispering in my ear, why renew the ST. This is as good as it gets, do you really want to see us struggling in the Prem. In the end I trusted in Wilder, and was swayed by the club holding prices stable.
What I would like to know is am I the only one to have experienced this crisis of faith and if so where should I seek help?
I didn't think twice about renewing my ticket, but I know where you're coming from.

How fookin true WWF. MY Dad always told me "they'll break your heart" and they did. Hopefully that's in the past. It's in our hands now but the legal fuck up has the potential to carry on our history. Wilder is past demi God, but can he change the small time syndrome and become GOD. Hope so. UTB

I've not experienced a crisis of faith as such, more a conflict between 1) enjoying the amazing success my club have achieved, but whilst 2) recognising that it means we're now in a circus of overpaid, divey, whingy millionaires, pretentious big clubs, shit TV coverage and infuriating rearranged Sky kick offs.

Same as last season then.

Just treat the Premier league with the contempt it deserves............Fuck em

When it comes to comparisons, we, as Blades hardly ever verge on the lunacy of our neighbour & those up the M1, we tend to not boast about what we're going to do in whatever match, league etc... we just seem to get on with it, accept it that we're bound to fail. Then there's been two seasons out of three when we've broken records, achieved promotion, played four against that mob and have never been beaten. We go into certain hoping, not expecting, or is that just me as 45yrs following SUFC?

So, a few questions to add...

What are you hoping for in 19/20?
What are you expecting for us in 19/20?

Is the bottom line, staying in the PL? Forget concentrating on the Cups?

PL Clubs last season tended to play weakened sides in the FA Cup, especially those with the flavour of relegation on their tongues. Did it achieve anything? Even Liverpool fielded a ''Reserve'' side at Wolves, losing.

I'm not expecting a gung-ho approach, but I don't want any United side going out onto the pitch, playing not to lose. I don't want us to be starstruck too, we encountered that the last time we were in the PL. So, what's the dilemma?

Coutts telling Adkins to fuck off, and he scuttled back to his bench, didn’t drag him off or anything was my peak. I walked out

Remember that clearly and that Coutts that season was a disgrace.. When he subsequently started trying for Wilder I still couldn't forgive him.

The last PL adventure, we were relegated.
No excuses as regards referees, ther media (they certainly didn't relegate us), Carlos Tevez didn't relegate us, making excuses for our own frailties, leave it out.
Cheated by Scudamore?

Insanity.

What were the ''excuses'' for our relegation to League One?
Same applies to the six years spent there, why didn't we gain promotion, until 2017?
Why not make excuses up now, just in case we get relegated next May?

We weren't good enough. Our last relegation from the PL was all our own doing.
As soon as supporters stop with the nonsense of a blame mentality and accept that at times, it wasn't anyone's issue except for ours.

Is that Dwight Yoakam?

Magnificent 😊

What’s the worst that can happen? We get relegated. So what? The championship is a decent league with good coverage and we’ll not have to worry about finances for at least two seasons. I’ve seen us relegated loads of times. It was shit, I got over it.

In the top 10 of worse things that can happen; with 10 being the worst, what you’ve described is probably only a ‘2’, possibly a ‘3’. :)

One of my least enjoyed seasons was with Warnock last time.

We weren't good enough, we didnt invest enough that summer, we were cheated by Scudamore, we were abused by referees regularly, every game was tense and draining. There were highs but rare compared to the stress of the lows. The media didn't like us, referees had it in for us and then to top it off we had Mike Dean for that last match. Down on goal difference to a very poor Wigan side while West Ham were helped along by refs, Man Utd , an 'eminent' judge from some Fantasy chuffing East End Charity and Scudamore.

Living hell. Then we gave our cash bonanza to Robson to spend followed by Blackwell to ruin.

Maybe Superjags, it can never be as bad again!!!!
That season was awesome.

After my original post, itmay come across as strange, but I think that my problems stem from an innate optimism. Over many years I have seen managers and players come and go, and in the beginning I almost felt positive about their appointment. That included Adams, Weir, and Adkins (it seemed like a good idea at the time).
I must say that I was particularly enthused when CW arrived and he and his team have brought us further and faster than I could ever have sensibly predicted
My optimism extends to the coming season. I like the strategy that seems to be emerging for the recruitment of new players. The wages level and hence the team ethic of what we already have is not being blown apart, and we can build on our recent success rather than pay roulette with the club’s future by making big name, big money signings we cannot afford long term if things don’t work out. I know that this low cost strategy is to whatever degree necessary because of the strictures of our owners, but it sits well with me anyway. For the first time in many years players come to us without costing silly money and are fitted into our system, and improve their performances. That is the sign of good management and coaching. In the past, the opposite often applied ie players with a good reputation frequently signed for us, and their performances seemed to decline.
For the coming season. If I had to stick my neck out, I would predict for us to finish mid/lower mid table ( which incidentally is where I predicted us to finish in our return season in the championship).
In the cups, we may enjoy a run, but I am not holding my breath. So far CW always seems to have prioritised the league. If we are establishing ourselves ok in the PL then it may make sense to have a bit more of a go in the cups.
My problem has been with such a roller coaster ride following The Blades over so many ears, you always seem to have that voice in your head saying that surely it can’t last and everything may go horribly wrong. I don’t think that I am alone in that. In my experience it has always been the nature of the majority of our supporters to fear the worst and be pleased for any success that comes our way. We don’t have the sense of entitlement that is more typical of other teams including our city neighbours
I will try to fight the voices and keep the faith. As usual I am looking forward to the new season and whatever it may bring

just enjoy it we really shouldnt be here. but it's another 1 of wilders miracles. if worst happens we seen greatest players live & have a ton of parachute payments

Logic suggests we’ll finish somewhere in the bottom 6 BUT

Logic goes out of the window when Chris Wilder is manager.
He’s exceeded fan expectations playing great football for 3 seasons running.
He gives players clear roles that enable them to play the best football of their careers within a positive team structure.

Logic would suggest we’ll finish probably 4th from bottom
But “the Wilder factor” means that I wouldn’t be surprised if we finish comfortable mid table or just below mid table.

It wasn't just Coutts though, didn't Freeman also tell him to fuck off. I seem to recall Adkins putting Coutts on a sub on the wing and in all sorts of luicrous positions to try and salvage something from an impending home defeat agaisnt the mighty Shrewsbury/Fleetwood/AN other. Clieless doesn't even begin to cover it.

The man was a charlatan and that last home game against Scunny is up there in top all time worst games at the Lane.

Don't know, but at least Freeman used to break into a sweat in the Adkins year.

I admire your optimism, SS.

Bet365 currently have us to finish bottom of the league. They have Norwich as 2nd from bottom, and then there's a sizeable gap to Burnley who they think will finish 3rd from bottom. That's Burnley with Barnes, Vydra, Wood and now Jay Rod to chose from upfront, 3 england international keepers on their books and suffuciant quality in between to put out an experienced premier league team.

Let's be 100% honest, looking at our squad that is currently training in Portugal, we be finishing up with a points tally between Huddersfield and Fulham.

I'm not sure where this anti-Coutts line comes from unless you are just being contrary for the sake of it, but Coutts never broke much sweat for CW either. He didn't need to.
His game was about positioning and accurate passing.

Carry on defending Adkins though if you are wanting more of 'woe is me':shark: victimised thing.
