I must admit, prior to this season I had watched very little Premier League football, but I have watched, at least, the highlights of every single game played so far this season.

Obviously based on very shallow knowledge, my thoughts before the season started were:

- The top 6 were out of sight and we had no chance against them.

I was wrong there. In reality it is the top 2 (maybe 3 with Spurs). All the rest are beatable.

- We would be in group with maybe 5 others trying to avoid relegation.

Wrong again, we can compete with at least 9 other clubs.

Things are looking good. I don't think we have even started to get into our stride yet. When we do we will feel increasingly comfortable at this level. I am very optimistic for this season. I honestly don't see 40 points plus as a problem at all.

Mirrored my thoughts exactly.

That first game against Bournemouth I was very apprehensive. Not sure what I was expecting but the hype surrounding the Premier League tends to make you think the football is on another planet.

When I used to watch match of the day with half arsed interest I used to think “well they don’t look that special but if it were us they were playing they’d be faster, stronger, more skilful and be running rings around us”

The truth is somewhere between. We have stepped up a level in our own skill set and so far the teams we have played aren’t invincible.

I think we’ll be more than alright. I think we’ll finish the highest of the three promoted teams, somewhere probably just below mid table, 11th, 12th or 13th.
 
Hope you are right and think if Mousset gets fit he could give us the pace needed in the PL to score on the break against some teams
 
Spurs arn't clicking at all this season. Few turned heads may settle now the transfer window has 'slammed shut'. Don't think Poch will last the season either. Trying to manage the team with his hands tied behind his back.

We’ve only played 4 games.

4 games into previous seasons we’ve been written off by many because we’ve got off to poor starts. Normally i reckon 10 games/ end of sept we start to see the league settle down. In previous seasons that would be a 5th of the season.

This season though we won’t reach 10 games until 26th October and another international break.

A 5th of this season would take us to around 8 games in, so after Watford we will see better where we are and how we’re doing.

I’d imagine that the top 6 will be pulling away a bit more.
 
I think the top 6 has been narrowed down to 2 for some calamitous decisions; very inexperienced managers at Chelsea and Man Utd, for some reason Arsenal have always been worth a nibble. Not sure what's up if anything at Spurs.
The biggest thing you realise which I never had, as the Prem meant as much to me as Leagues 1 and 2 (last season); mistakes yes you do get punished but teams make them more often than you'd think. Sitters; we've missed 2 but other clubs have as well, it's just when Man City stick 4 in, you don't need to worry about the shot that went 5 feet wide from the 8 yards out.

Tbh my thoughts aren't really based on how we are playing - I actually don't think we are playing anything like how we can. They are based on how I had vastly over-estimated the other teams in the prem. Tufty is spot on, when we realise that we belong there and are there on merit, I think we will go from strength to strength.
 
Not sure what to think after just 4 games. I think we've surprised and impressed everybody by our decent start. Given Palace and Lestuh are currently top 4 makes it even better plus we've avoided a negative goal difference. We were beaten by a worldly strike by Barnes which Henderson had no chance against.

We won at a cantor against Palace who are currently top 4, ( I think)
 
It's early days yet ,
I think though that we'll need a higher number of points to survive than has been required in the last few years.
 
I think the biggest fear we will have in this league is injuries, it's the thing that checked our gallop up the championship the first season back, although on paper we look better prepared for that now than back then.
Looking back at our first season in the championship gives me a lot of hope for our future in this division, back then who would have thought we would have found such a fine replace for Coutts in so short a time ?
Not only did they "MIND THAT GAP" they went on to stick two fingers up to the smug buggers who were bleating it...…….. :D :D:D
 
Before a ball was kicked I said we'd stay up comfortably. Seen nothing so far to make me change my mind. Yes it's early days, but we haven't got going properly yet either, once we do there won't be too many teams that get the better of us.

Yeah that’s what I mean, it’s easy to make an early judgement but we’ve played just 10% of the season so can we really judge?

Like people say it's early days, but it looks far more open so far than my thoughts before. I think definitely agree need to aim higher.

Looking at the early table (I'd have taken 5pts from 4, so good start for us IMO), the only team that have looked really bad is Watford. Most of the teams in 'our part of the league' have already looked impressive at times, and some have potentially had tougher starts.

I don't get the Maths here. I thought the point was that other than the top 2, there hasn't really been a top 6 (or next 4) so far. It doesn't matter if those 2 win every game, if the other 4 aren't close.

(meaning that if lower teams are getting points from the 4 of 'top 6' then we may likely need to aswell) - hence I think 40 might be a dangerous point tally this season, as the member above suggested.

So logically, I think it's better for us, if the top 6 all do well. We'll know more after Soton game. This was in my list of 'need to be winning' to stay up calculations! 🤣

I like this post and I see us getting better as the season goes on, but, and there was always gonna be one.... Every team is fantastic on their day, don't expect Burnley to be easier than Spurs. They won't be..

Southampton will be a good measure of where we really are, because we're wank after the break normally..
 
Far too early to judge.

Thing is we are stronger than we have ever been, well since Woodward in 1971 anyway!

If it doesn't end well then all credit to 17 better teams.

This league is very unforgiving. The bottom can drop out of your world very quickly. Two defeats in a row and then you start to wonder where your next point is coming from.
For example if we don’t beat Southampton we go into Everton (A) Liverpool (H) under a bit of pressure.
We are doing alright but need to play our own game from the start and with chances at a premium, we need to take them.
All obvious I know, but that initial optimism can fall flat quite rapidly.

The Maths is, that whilst there's teams getting nearly 100 points, there won't be sides at the bottom relegated with over 40. Unless they finish about 10 points off a champions league spot, which aint happening.
 
Let's see how this month goes, Saturday is the 1st game a lot will now be expecting us to win and that brings about different pressures. We've then got Everton away and Liverpool at home. Given there's only 4 pts separating 4th from 19th the table can change very quickly.

I agree that we haven't looked out of place yet and the division seems to be a lot closer this season with no real obvious whipping boys at this stage but there's a long way to go and as we've said, it's how we deal with a couple of defeats as and when that happens that will tell us a lot more about our overall chances this season.

On the flip side, we're not pushing for promotion/league winners (yet) either, so dropped points arn't a huge concern unless the losses start to pile up. 6th-17th is a big area to target.
