Realise it is a bit late but any thoughts on a banner for the Kop pointing out that we are the original united?

No idea of cost or time lines but is it feasible?

Always thought that the club (and even Sheffield) should publicise this more.
We’ve had the “forged in steel” and the “Sheffield is red and white“ club banners.

Why not some “Worlds first United” and “worlds oldest stadium’ banners.

There should also be “Football heritage“ day trip packages to attract foreign visitors.
This could include a mini bus trip to Sheffielfd FC (worlds oldest club), Sandygate (world oldest stadium belonging to Hallam FC), Hillsboro (famous for the disaster)) and Bramall Lane (world oldest pro stadium, place where the world 1st cup competition was played ).

Theres so much history in and around Sheffield.....surely it would be attractive excursion package for visitors and encourage tourism.

I’d say not because it’s contrived. We may be the original United in terms of the cricket team but we’re certainly not the first football team to be called United and we haven’t played cricket at the Lane for nearly fifty years. I’d rather we focussed on the future.

it’s all semantics......we are the first United of the clubs still in existence.
I believe Plymouth United were the 1st football club called United but they no longer exist.

Also regards cricket and history......when you live in Sheffield it doesn’t seem such a big deal.
However you can bet that foreign visitors (especially any from the US) would be massively impressed with Sheffield having so many firsts.

You can imagine the large sums they would pay to see original memorabilia at Sheffield FC, to stand on the Leppings Lane end where the disaster happened, to visit Sandygate (the oldest stadium in the world), then to have a stadium tour and see the museum at Bramall Lane, could even throw in visits to the old Millmoor and the New York stadium in nearby Rotherham.

Would imagine with a minibus this could all be done in a day......and would be so memorable for football lovers around the world.
With the right marketing this excursion could be on 10,000’s of rich peoples bucket list.

It’s not semantics. Being the original and being the oldest surviving are two different things.

it’s reminds me of the title of “world oldest stadium”.

I’ve seen us, Mansfield, Preston and even Wolves claim that title.
Preston have played at their stadium longer than any other club in world football, really they are the oldest tenants in the world.
Bramall Lane is the oldest football stadium but was used for football nearly 30 years before SUFC even existed.

However it depends what is meant by a “stadium”
Apparently Mansfield‘s ground was originally a patch of grass (like in the park) where an organised team used to play their matches.
Then Wolves fans say the area where Molineaux stands was originally a large park where people would sometimes play football.

I always thought we should have kept our ties with the original United instead of booting them out BL. When the South Stand was built we should have also built a cricket ground as a replacement.

We couldn’t even afford to build the south stand.

Who were the first football team to be called United?

Hanover United, who shortly after changed their name to Polytechnic FC. They entered the FA cup in 1879.

I haven’t checked Wikipedia, but I’m assuming they changed their name to University FC some time in the early 1990’s 😂

I’ve been trying to remember their name all morning and I live about two miles from where they play.

No, Hanover United, we’ve already established that, do keep up.

No no no!

Their local team is Hannover 96 and they are in Lower Saxony, which is nowhere near Jakarta.

BTW be careful in the Bush as we've seen loads of shocking stuff about all those wildfires. Stay safe!

All I know is that whoever works the scoreboard better have it up as “United” v “Manchester” or I’m snapping up my season ticket and sending it back in an envelope.

At some point late 60's and frequenting the barbers on Church St., the fella who cut my hair had a client who worked for Husband & Co consulting architects/engineers. Apparently Husbands had submitted a design/plan for separate but conjoined cricket/football ground within the bounds of BDTBL as we know it. Think Headingly cricket and RLFC ground.
A little research showed me Husbands had designed stands at The Lane and Hillsborough with more illustrious contracts at Jodrell Bank also Goonhilly Downs radio telescopes and the rebuild of Britannia Bridge over the Menai Straights. Surprisingly they also designed the bridge with rail track a mile ether side for the film "Bridge On The River Kwai", filmed in Ceylon aka Sri Lanka. Regards SUCC, could be invited back to the fold playing at The Lane with laid in wicket. When the complete, BDTBL, rebuild occurs with roof get YCCC back anawl part of United's history.

This is one occasion where a half and half scarf might be justified. United and Newton Heath
