Hanover United FC (later Polytechnic FC) founded in 1876, incorrectly claim the accolade for the first football club with ‘United’ in their name, in fact an early Sheffield team United Mechanics FC from 1865 takes the prize. Of course, Sheffield United is the first ever Football League club called ‘United’ (1892), beating Newcastle United by one year (1893), Burton United (1901) by nine years and Manchester United (1903) by eleven years.
