The number 9 shirt - who gets it?

Michael Brown will reclaim 7. He's the special signing. Very special.

Think It will be Evans wearing #9 Lavery will get Dones #11 as it's more suited to him.well this is what a I would want won't happen though.

People have already bought kits with names and numbers on so I can't see the club messing about with the numbers which is a shame as I get annoyed at stupid use of squad numbers.as mentioned above Adams being #9 and Beattie #6?!?!?!??

What about number 7?

This is very, very important.

I think it'll go to Carruthers. And I actually think the number 7 position, right midfield, could be his best position next season, if we play that way. Maybe a partnership with Baldock similar to what Brayford and Coutts were supposed to have.

That only works between Brayford and Coutts if you have Clough in there to make up a threesome.

On that note...do you think it will be possible to read the numbers on the shirts this season? I know I am an old fart, but back in't day you used to be able to read the numbers on the player's shirts. United, for example, used to have a white patch sewn onto the back of the striped shirt so it made the numbers stand out - and we didn't have the players names on them either - because I bet you every fan in the country could tell you who the number 7 or number 10 was for Sheff Utd - or the number 9 for Newcastle, or the number 5 for West Ham, and so on.

Nowadays it seems more fashionable to make the numbers almost impossible to read. And as for having sponsors names on the back of the shirts as well as the front - no sorry, I really don't like that.

We need to put a stop to this madness before it goes too far and we end up with a football shirt that looks more like an advertising sandwich board:

Back of shirt...

"Door Deals"
"Evans"
"9"
"Domino's Pizza"
"Travelodge"

Just wouldn't be right would it?

I agree with you.i suspect it will become PL rules within a couple of years and FL rules within a couple more.. I think it's been the rule in the CL a ever since it became the CL.

I prefer a box to a block colour back though same as yourself

That's pretty poor customer service though.

Eh?

He hasn't finished assembling the squad so they can't give numbers out until they all report back for training. If some silly sods want to take a punt on Ched being no. 9 then that's their lookout and you can hardly blame the club.

True but I was thinking of last year's players rather than the new ones. It would just be simpler to retain the existing numbers. It's not like they mean anything anymore. It's a squad game now and we haven't played 235 for well over fifty years.

Hardly, it's like getting McNulty 7 on my shirt now and complaining to the club when he doesn't wear it. Or getting Leonard 8. Why not hang fire?
Why bother release them? Try explaining to an eight year old why he can't have his shirt now, with a name and number on.

"You will have to wait until Santa comes, you little bastard"

Seems fair enough to me.
Btw, it's not a dig at United in particular. It's a problem with a lot of clubs. They rush to get the replica kit out for summer and then you get loads of kids with the 'wrong name' on their shirts. I heard a bloke phoning Talksport saying his kid's favourite players are Barkley and Lukaku.

No sympathy for the Scouse git, especially as Barkley helped the pigs cheat their way to safety with half a million loan players. I suppose he ended the call asking if anyone knew where to get the 'compo'?

Anyone who pays £50 for a few ounces of extruded petroleum byproducts, deserves all they get.

Same reason they can't get a Blades away shirt yet! Get the name, add the number later?

Yes, it's an option. The only point I'm making is that given squad numbers mean fuck all it makes sense to keep the same ones from last year so that those who want to by shirts early can do so knowing the number isn't going to change.

Anyone who buys owt deserves what they get. Or not.

Get that. But what if they want Evans or Thomas or Baldock? :)

There won't be many kids wanting those though. They want Billy or Fleck or Freeman or JOC or ..... Players they know and have watched. I think the older people are sensible enough to wait. There might be the odd one but you'd still have a better success rate.
Of course, the next question is what if you buy a shirt with Billy on it and we sell him to Sunderland. And my answer is, just because you can't make something perfect doesn't mean you shouldn't try to improve it.

Maybe Evans then!

No, you were right in the first place. Don't bother trying to improve anything, it's usually pointless. I'm more than happy to agree that you're right, I don't care enough about the topic to continue.

Lavery won't give it up. Nor should he.

But as it stands, Evans and Sharp will be the main pairing, of which I have no doubt. Whatever numbered shirts !

UTB

No they won't.

Evans will have to earn his opportunity. And that puts him behind Sharp, Clarke, Lavery and Hanson.

He will be cautious with Evans to begin with. He won't want to thrust him straight into the spotlight and I think that's right given all that's gone on.

It would be such an opportunity for the media to criticise Evans and the club if he doesn't deliver straight away. So why risk that?

Evans, if fit, will emerge later in the season and could be a revelation for us. But leave the lad out of the spotlight to begin with. Get folks used to the idea he's back first. Then the stage will be his.
