Usually it's meant for the main central striker. Last season when the squad numbers were announced it went to our "brightest prospect" Che Adams. Of course, we sold him before a ball was kicked in anger. So it eventually went to Caolan Lavery, who did well for us in flashes, but not enough, for me, to earn such a famous shirt. The likes of which has been filled with legends down the years.

So how about this coming season? Let Lavery keep it? Or give it to whom?

Clarke?

Evans?

Somebody else?

Caolan Lavery keeps the shirt.....I doubt Mr Wilder is too fussed about who wears what and can't see him wanting to un-motivate Lavs by taking his shirt number away...big season for the lad.

That said, remember the shirt sales.....Lavery 9 is £45 for the shirt and £9.50 for the name and number at £1 a letter and £3.50 per number.....so £54.50 a pop.....Clarke would be the same and Evans a pound less at £53.50 so he wont get it........I have heard that McCabe is trying to hi-jack the Ricky Van Wolfswinkel move to Basel.....that's worth £62.50 per shirt...!!!

Probably let Lavery keep it, if not then Clarke. I don't think we should give Evans the 9 shirt at someone else's expense before he's done anything for us. But I've got a feeling he might get it.

Shame Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink has retired then. £20 just for the name.

Nah....Evans will get the 14 shirt...

I like this thread. But agree it's in the wrong section. Mods please feel free to move it.

For what it's worth, I think the number 9 shirt will go to Evans. It will be a sentimental gesture as much as anything else. It will say, "here you go Ched - have your old shirt back - and now show us your old form - turn back the clock and play like it never happened". And I really hope he can.

Surely anyone with a brain can see that the Evans deal was purely for shirt sales!! :D

I like the sound of this gents

I'd give it to Clarke. Then the psychology of easing Evans back in with no pressure whilst wearing a 9 on his back means he can have the 29 shirt.

Clarke every day of the week UTB

Ched has got number 69 and a " do not disturb " sign hung from the 9.

Beat me too it.
Seriously I'd keep Caolan at 9.
Wasn't Scougall number 8? If so,give Ched that. Or McNultys number 7. But then there's Ricky Holmes to accommodate, and Leonard, and Thomas and the marquee special striker signing.
I'm going for a lay down.

I'd give it to the new pacey forward who we're going to sign alongside the new pacey centre back. If we don't then we should give it to the paciest forward on the books already.

I missed out on Mick Jones, but Billy Dearden was my favourite number 9. Bust a gut and scored goals.

Edwards a close second. Agana was great as well but not a traditional number 9 i.e. Centre forward. More of a inside forward.

Evans, in his last season for us, was as good as any I've ever seen in a number 9 shirt for United. But it didn't last long. That's why I'm hoping he will resume where he left off!

What about number 7?

This is very, very important.

I think it'll go to Carruthers. And I actually think the number 7 position, right midfield, could be his best position next season, if we play that way. Maybe a partnership with Baldock similar to what Brayford and Coutts were supposed to have.
