Just been watching a programme about the golden boys of Man Utd and what struck me was how small most of them were.

Comparison of their Fergie Class in early stage of rebuild and Clough's this year, height for height.

5'6" Scoles
5'7" Parker.
5'8" Irwin, Blackmore.
5'10" Ince, Kanchelskis, Hughes, McClair, Butt.
5'11" G. Neville, P.Neville, Giggs, Robson,
6'0" Bruce, Sharpe,
6'2" Cantona
6'4" Pallister

The Clough Class:

5'4" Holt,
5'5" Reed height not known, maybe 5'5"
5'7" B. Davies, Scougall, Flynn.
5'8" Alcock, Harris, Brayford.
5'9" Murphy
5'10" Baxter, McNulty, Done, Freeman, Kennedy, Doyle
5'11" Basham, J. Wallace, Adams height not known maybe 5'11"
6'0" Coutts, McEveley.
6'1" S. Davies, Higdon.

I must say I am surprised at the comparison and maybe we should have battled our weight more pound for pound, and height more inch for inch. Central defence shouts out though. If Clough has been so naive then maybe Fergie was:), only kidding but there is a point there I think.

Dont spoil Woodwardfan's repetitive rant!

Hey Silent, read the OP a bit more closely , I'm defending Clough's approach on this occasion.

If Man Utd weren't big then maybe Clough had more right to expect more from his players and it wasn't so naive an approach. Personally I was less wound up about size than others but it was the endless number look-alike play-alikes sat on the bench that always seemed daft.

Nobody would leave Scoles out of any team and he's 5'6". Reed might even be heavier than him already. All we needed was a Pallister and a Bruce in central defence - just two players short then!;)

Didn't realise Cantona was that tall and no way is Butt 4 inches taller than Scholes. I would also question 6' for Lee Sharpe ,he did our Gents evening last year and didn't look anywhere near that. Interesting that to a man they all reckon Butt is the hardest of the lot.

doesn't matter.. it's all about the referees and how they apply the rules.. long story short.. players are allowed to get pushed around more in the english esp. lower leagues. even lionel would struggle down here because he does't have the proper referee protection.. look at chelsea.. they are massive except hazard and cesc

All the heights are quoted as facts on wikipedia. Beckham 6' surprised me.

It's an interesting look at things and certainly food for thought.

But, I think it only matters when the team isn't succeeding (ie it's an effect rather than a cause). If we were running rings around oppositions and the low-centres of gravity, quick feet, maybe a little snappy around the ankles, were obvious fruits of being a small side, then everything is fine and dandy and the team is happy being "the little shits". If we're not succeeding, getting beaten in the air, knocked around, bullied and getting no protection from referees, then it becomes a real negative - just lining up alongside big teams in the tunnel must have an impact psychologically.

At 5'7" I'm talking from experience ;)
