Was in 1962. On the 10th, Doc Pace got a brace in the 2-1 win at West Ham and that saw us climb into 6th place and swapping positions with Wendy. In the previous Saturday Pace also got a brace in the 2-1 win at S6.

We did in September and for a bit in November and didnt come back to the top 6 until after drawing at Birmingham in the last game of the season. On 5th April we had 2 games in hand over most of the teams in the division. Our game at Chelsea (postponed on 23rd November) and Birmingham (Birmingham were playing in the FA Cup semi against Fulham on the day we were due to play there) were rearranged for the last two midweek dates of April (the scheduled last round of fixtures were 26th April but us, Brum, L**ds, Arsenal, West Ham and Spurs still had one more to play - Spurs escaped relegation by beating L**ds 4-2)You will know this Silent Blade .
When we finished 6th in 1975, would I be right in thinking that we'd crept up the league in the latter part of the season but never actually got above 6th at any point?
(1961 / 62 Liverpool won the old second division championship as Bill Shankly's revolution was just starting. )
Taking number of games and how many points per game we would need to achieve 64 points this season to equal that result in 1962.
That's a further 28 points from the next 13 games.

I use the below website to check what position we were in the first division in any week in any seasons since the 1930s (apart from 1962-63 and 1975-76 as we were a division above them in those two seasons). I have not checked the other seasons when both Blades and Chelsea were in the 1st divisions before then. It is a brilliant websiteI don't know how you know the shit you do Silent but keep it up![]()
If United ever employ a club historian, you should get the job Silent.

No, I forgot to include the link when replying to RoygbivHi Silent
Are you talking about 11v11, because that site gives all that information.
Fair to say The current Blades mirror your gritty determination to do it your way. An attitude to be admired and applauded mate.Very astuteI remember it well. My Wednesday supporting dad glowering at me as we sat at the wireless listening to the results coming through. His simmering hatred for everything red and white, my deference to his overtures. He never got over the fact that I overthrew the family tradition of following the father son love of Hillsborough/Wednesday every other Sarurday. I was more than happy to either walk or get two buses from the Kelvin to the Lane, I think it defined me, even then as a young person who could recognise and avoid the trap of servile obedience.
And here we are 60 years later, talking of Europe whilst his beloved Wednesday are stuttering mid table, looking scarily over their shoulders of the deadly drop to div 2 (3 really).

I remember in 1992, we actually got to 7th before losing to Leeds and Wimbledon in the last two games of the season and finished 9th.

I remember 1992 well. John Fashanu did his best to ensure we won that day hand-balling twice in his own area.
I was working most Saturdays back then but I managed to go to quite a number of games. Went down to Selhurst Park for the Wimbledon game on the last day in full 'yesteryear footballer' garb. We had Mervyn Day on loan who had a mare and the rest of the players played like they were already on the beach.I remember 1992 well. John Fashanu did his best to ensure we won that day hand-balling twice in his own area. I think one was given a pen but not the other. Very suspicious. Of course two years later, much of that same Wimbledon team, collapsed to Everton 3 - 2 on the last day of the season and we went down.
March 1991. I was stood with Wimbledon fans and about 20 yards away from both handball incidents. Very strange.
I was weird but I'd be amazed if there wasn't something dodgy going on with that. You're right though, I'd got it a year later than it was.

The Scoogall "Rugby Tackle" in close up
The really dirty trip on Woody (who had a lengthy treatment from Cec Coldwell afterwards) in the last 10 mins of our home game against Man U in Sept 1972 but the ref "feeling guilty about it" awarded us a penalty (Woody converted it with a lot of power as if he was still angry about the earlier...www.s24su.com
