A like a nice bit of "cave-aged" Gruyere myself. I don't mind Emmental though, but it reminds me of chewing the rubber off my pencil. When I was a kid the only cheeses I knew were "red" and "white". That's what me mam used to call them. They were Red Leicester and Cheshire I think. I always preferred "red". As I've got older and become more sofisticayted I like Dairylea and Laughing Cow now.

Reminds me of our wedding reception when they served apple pie with Wensleydale cheese. (A Yorkshire tradition apparently!). Folks thought it was ice cream and were stabbing at it!

Should be a rule in the remembrance games that if you’re not in the ground at 5 to 3, you wait outside until the minutes silence is over. Ruined every year by pissed up twats coming in late and not realising what’s happening.

From my vantage point it seemed people were applauding the laying of the wreaths. Not disrespectful as such, but I’m always amazed at how people fail to understand what a minute of silence actually is.

I've never heard of cheese and apple pie, but my Mum always has cheese and fruit cake! It seems to be a 'thing' with the female side of my Sheffield family!?

I wondered what that was about. Yes, it started in the Burnley end, but it was copied by other parts of the ground - not by me or by many folks near me I should add. In fact I was totally puzzled by it. I don't know the reason why it started, but if it was for the reasons you say then the clapping was just as disrespectful as the shouting. The request was for silence. Not for applause. Thousands of Blades fans copied the Burnley fans and starting clapping. It would be interesting to hear from those who did, why they did, when the request had been made for silence?

Of course, "a minute's applause" has been adopted at football games now as a show of respect. It's not something I agree with personally, especially when it is used to interrupt the game. I think the half-time interval is more appropriate for that. However, I suspect that as soon as the clapping started, other fans just copied it because it's what some others were doing and they've come to associate it with "respect".

We have a huge screen in one corner of the ground. We should consider putting the word "SILENCE" on there, during such events, just so it's really obvious for those most hard of understanding.

So, no last post this time, no reveille and no one minute's silence. I mean...should we just pack it in altogether or should we try and do it properly next time? If so, then I'm afraid the instructions for the hard of understanding need to be much clearer!

I always think it has a place at football and is always well respected wherever it takes place. I dont understand however why it now takes place a week before remembrance Sunday. Presumably it will happen again this Saturday at Spurs being as it's the nearest date to the 11th? I grew up watching my dad play local sunday league football and it was always commemorated on the Sunday nearest the 11th November. It lasted as far as I can remember until the 1990s when I was playing and then started to peter out.

I think a simple 1 minute silence at a football nearest the 11th November is totally appropriate. The problem as the OP is hinting towards is that at the lane it's starting to become the Gary Sinclair show where we have to have it at home every year, so a full 9 days prior to remembrance this year, plus an "exhortation", a bugler and a minutes silence, all happening when thousands of fans are still trying to get in the ground or are in the bar, like the Burnley fans on Saturday.

KISS should be the approach to trying to get 30,000 to do anything, especially at a sporting event, but I do fear that Gary sees this as an opportunity to make his mark

I feel it's obvious nowadays that if you mix in any choreography or a set piece to the minutes silence proceedings, people will clap. Last Post, Reveille, Wreath Laying, bit of marching, a salute, some poetry, whatever .... clap clap clap. IMHO, people reacted to the grandiose & somewhat pointless penalty spot wreath laying with applause. Anything other than - "there now follows a minutes silence which will begin & end on the whistle" - whistle - silence - whistle .... will result in some applause during the "silence". I don't mind putting my head on the block. Clubs (and I don't think Sinclair is responsible) are trying to out do each other, to make it a "we're better than the other clubs" display. And, that is wrong. Hold this card up, form a big Poppy, present a big cheque, how many service personnel can you cram on the pitch, cannons (Rangers FC), wreaths galore, poems, singing. Just have whistle - silence - whistle & the respect will trickle back.

Another issue for me is that the the DeeJay Gary Show seems to be getting more militaristic each year. If thats your bag, go to Barkers Pool etc for the pomp and ceremony.
Saturdays spectacle just stopped short of Gary marching on with the service personnel and fucking saluting. For me its pure hokem and has no place at a football match.
Did he actually have a beret on?? no one has confirmed it.
I know peoples emotions run high on this subject and have no wish to start an argument or have to bat off any incoming righteous fury, it is only one mans opinion.
