A performance that typified United's season so far. A team much reduced in talent, but totally committed and with just enough about them to outdo most opponents.

A very tight first half in which neither team had any attacking edge, but Kitson, who otherwise was labouring without joy, suddenly ran onto a ball over the top to finish classily. Horrible defending by Preston who were caught totally square, just as they were repeatedly against MK Dons on TV last week.

The second half was much more entertaining with PNE pushing forward and United using Blackman's pace to break dangerously. Maguire and Hill were rock solid in defence, dealing with a series of high crossed balls, while McDonald finally found the occasional bit of space to play his football. United had to soak up pressure but had the best of the chances with Blackman nearly scoring a great solo goal, while another of his breaks led to a PNE defender hitting his own post.

At the other end, Akpo Sodje came on and inevitably won a few high balls and caused a few scrambles in the box. But United protected Long's goal fiercely until the final minute of added time when Long secured the points with what one PNE player called a 'worldie'. I couldn't tell whether the ball just hit him or whether he saved it. But either way - critical stuff.

So there we have it. United much less easy on the eye than before, much greener in attack, but still made effective by Wilson. Credit to him.

Long - 8 - Couldn't fault him.
McMahon - 5 - Decent defensively but couldn't do much right on the ball.
Williams - 7 - Solid, pacey, impressive.
Hill - 7 - Solid is the word of the day.
Maguire - 8 - A giant.
Flynn - 5 - Scurried, ran, and scurried some more.
McDonald - 5.5 - Totally squashed by PNE in the first half. A couple of great bursts in the second.
Doyle - 6.5 - Some misplaced passes but we really do rely on him to cover for McDonald.
McAllister - 5 - Worked hard, lacks a bit of self belief.
Blackman - 7 - Did little in the first but was our threat in the second. Still frustrates but could become a super player.
Kitson - 6 - Couldn't get a kick or a flick but scored the winner totally out of the blue before coming off at HT.

Porter - 6 - A totally selfless player. Did all the right things.
Collins - N/A - Only on a short time, but enjoyable because a home fan behind the dugout yelled "I'm glad you're coming on cos you're shit".
Miller - N/A - Again on a short time. Would like to see more.

Ref - Did fine.

Wilson - All the right calls.

No mention of the climatic conditions at kick-off?
No crimes against hoof?
No description of your chosen beverages?

Go away and come back when you can do it right.

the bonus of today was Tranmere taking the lead then blowing it 1-3
makes our workmanlike 1-0 suffocation of prestons threat all the more satisfying

Apologies.

1, Surprisingly toastie.
2, A day for scuffling.
3, Lime and soda. Cup of Tea. Another lime and soda.

(rock and roll)

Thanks for the report JD, I didn't get to listen to much of it in the end but I'm glad we're showing the spirit to overcome the loss of quality we suffered over the summer. It's unbelievable to see this side still unbeaten when you consider the lack of depth in the squad. Wilson deserves alot of credit for this season so far.

I'm glad you mentioned how selfless Porter is too. He's not a prolific goalscorer but I bet the likes of Blackman and Miller love playing alongside him and Kitson.

It was bloody warm for Preston in late October. It's damn high near the back of that stand!

Now I'm home I've got a delicious Sicilian red on the go. Rich and deep, but more complex than a lumbering Merlot.

Half price in Waitrose too. Which was nice.
Im road testing a nice Temparanilo semillion
Oily full textured , with the hint of wildflowers, really nice
got it in Spain for 1 euro 20

Thanks JohnDenver. I listened on the radio. The fans get a 9 from me. Loud from first minute and throughout. I'm sure you were right at the heart of it.

I once had a Sicilian red. Sophia, I think, was her name.

Ders not many crimes ageinst hoof tekkin place these days muckers. Wilson has got his team grinding out results Blackwell style. Rock solid and smashing and grabbing. How fitting it was a hoof from the right back that was converted by an ale house target man. Wilson must be close to smashing King Kev`s away record now. As for ales, I can help you with that. Thorny Goat ale was my ale of the weekend. A knock your block off stout. Malt; chocloate and coffee combined to make a delicous drink. 6 percent n all which adds a real kick to it. Only noticed it was an Australian beer when looking up on t`internet. Thanks for report though JD. Sounded like we edged it on Radio Shef. Cracking result. We really need to build on that by winning our next two home games.

Bud served in ground, Cheese and onion Seabrooks crisps in ground, Blades win = don't get much better

If only you'd not wandered down for your Bud, you might have seen the goal like I did :-)

Just got back myself.....Preston game followed by a 'romantic' trip to Blackpool to see the illuminations(and a few pubs) with the wife followed by bein dragged to the Trafford Centre

I thought we were very easy on the eye in the 2nd half. Really couldn't see PNE scoring. We need to take our chances thou. As for KMac..he needs to take more responsibility with the ball as with his ability he will cut most teams open. An example being the pass near the end to Williams in the box to shoot wide when their defence was back peddling and he could have cut onto his right foot and had a shot from 18 yards .

Thought the fans support was excellant for the most part and the GCB near the end was the loudest I have heard for a long time

As for the marks....I thought Hill and Maguire were easily our stand out performers and Blackman's peformance in the 2nd half was the best I've seen him play so far.

I dont know about u lot, but id rather play alongside someone who's good, rather than merely 'selfless'.

He's not done a lot wrong in the minutes he's had so far.

'selfless' is another way of saying he brings others into the game and creates opportunities for them. Looks assured and has show some good touches.

If we didn't have Kitson, I think he'd have forced his way into the big man starting role by now.

fair point. but he's not good enough to start, nor is he, purely in my opinion, good enough to play for us.

i dont go as often as u guys, but iv rarely seen him look up to it. admittedly its not a fair comparison, but when we had Ched it was often embarrassing watching them play together, Porter was so far behind in every department.

as long as he stays a squad player il be happy, just dont fancy trekking to London to rely on him again!

Long - 8 - Couldn't fault him.
Solid. Well protected the few times they had a chance to pressure him with high balls and a fat bastard. But for THAT save at the end, I'd give him at least 11.:p

It was my daughter's first proper United game. "Its REALLY loud!" was her considered opinion. She's experienced a full MCG for a big Aussie rules game & the olympics football at Old Trafford. 3000-odd Unitedites are impressively louder! She even joined in with the GCB. Hope to get to Carlisle in December, and she's desperate to go to The Lane.

Nice to see Hill and Porter getting some decent reviews Hill has filled in alongside McGuire well and will return to left back now Collins has returned.
Porter will be involved more now by Wilson because he knows Kitson will be gone in the New Year.

Wilson has obviously seen something in Mcallister and I for one would love to see him make the grade this season.

IMO Hill has been better at centre half than Collins this season . Not a certainty Collins will come straight back in.

The Hill situation has got rid of one of my major fears for this season. I thought that if Maguire or Collins got injured or suspended we would be stuffed (last season). However Hill has slotted in seemlessly. Collins should have to fight for his place back. The bigger picture is that we could suffer and injury or suspension (even rest one of the two - remember Maguire came in at 18 and played every game, bar the one he was suspended for a red card) this season. This could be a very important factor over the whole season. Well done to Hill. He took some criticism early doors. However he is a good, versatile defender.

True Hill has been very solid at centre half. Williams also had his best game in a Blades shirt and was excellent on Saturday. McMahon however after a promising start to his Blades career is steadily regressing.
