According to Reddit / Opta. Are we being too harsh and expecting too much? We’ve one of the weakest squads facing the hardest start in the toughest league.

Do we get through the next two holding our nerve ready to kick on?

8-0 against Newcastle, i don't think losing or difficult starts are issues. As long as the team put effort and work hard I don't think many will be too harsh, more realistic.

I was thinking this the other day. Of the games we've played so far, where would the points be expected to come from ?

Palace (expectation would be draw or win) - 1pt/3pts
Forest (draw) -1
Man City (loss) =
Everton (win) -2
Spurs (loss) =
Newcastle (loss) =
West Ham (draw would be optimistic) -1
Fulham (draw) -1

So I'd say we should be targeting 6 or 8pts from there, so we're 5 or 7 off the pace.

Palace and Forest games were too early for us. Games where we would be targeting points after the window closed.

Other than Everton and Palace games - are we seriously expected to win any of the others?

We've only played 1 team in the bottom 10 at home.
We HAVE to be targeting home wins against - Bournemouth, Burnley, Luton, Brentford, Wolves, Forest and Fulham

There's 21pts there

The fact we've lost seven of the first eight isn't a shock considering who we've played. The thing that makes it concerning are the performances.

Losing to Newcastle isn't a surprise to anyone with any sense, but to lose 8-0 at home? Yes, freak results happen and they're very good, but a scoreline like that reflects a team giving up.

Losing away to West Ham and Fulham also isn't in itself that worrying. But the way we played in both those games was.

If we can't get more organised defensively or do a better job of keeping possession, it won't matter who we're playing in this league.

Can only guess you're looking at the results instead of watching the full 90 minutes of matches.

Results wise, I agree 1 point isn't a disaster, it's a tough league where we've played some of the better teams.
Would have expected us to beat Everton and draw away at Forest= 4 points, so 1 point isn't much less.
Also apart from Newcastle, our results have been respectable, no one apart from Newcastle has thrashed us.

However good luck and bad luck can play a part in results.
If you want to predict future results it's usually best to study the performances.

When we were relegated under Warnock we competed well, went out to win the game in home matches.
Took a few risks, it generally worked but sometimes we'd be caught out. Away matches we were cautious aiming for the draw.

When we were relegated under Wilder we competed well, we could still pass the ball well and matches were often close.
Our problem was struggling to score goals and not much creativity/ quality to even create them.
We seemed to lose loads of matches 1-0 and once the opposition scored you sensed the match was over.

However this season the performances have been much worse than anyone expected.
We look disorganised, can't string 3 passes together, too keen to boot it clear straight back to the opposition
This means the ball goes straight back to the opposition and our defence is under pressure again.
We are currently averaging over 20 shots against us every match. It's possible we could have lost every match 4 and 5-0.

If we accept our players are upper Championship standard then why is there an acceptance we can't compete?
Why is there an acceptance that our players can't control a ball and make a 5 yard pass.
Why is there an acceptance that losing 0-8 at home is OK because we played a much better team.
I doubt many league 1 teams would lose 0-8 at home to Newcastle and it wasn't even a case of "one of those days, every time Newcastle shot it flew in".
On another day we lose 10 or 11-0 to Newcastle. Our biggest defeat in 134 years.

Our tactics seem to be damage limitation and we look like a league 1 or league 2 team playing Liverpool in the cup.
Hecky has some valid excuses but no way can this level of underperformance and embarrassment be tolerated.

However we should only sack Hecky if we have a replacement lined up.
If we can't persuade anyone suitable to come then obviously by default we keep Hecky.
However my worry is that the players seem to have lost respect for the manager and we could do a Sunderland suffering another relegation next season.

We've been unlucky to come up against 8 teams that were all better than us!

😁

Judging by that Everton fans must be shitting it.
They've played us (20th), Luton (17th), Bournemouth (19th), Brentford (14th), Wolves (15th) and Fulham (12th). The only sides they've played currently in the top half are Arsenal (2nd) and Villa (5th). That's an average of 14,

By contrast, we've had Spurs (1st), Man C (3rd), West Ham (7th), Newcastle (8th), Palace (9th), Fulham (12th), Forest (13th) & Everton (16th) for an average of 8.6

There's not many teams whose position has changed much from where they finished last year. Our opponents had an average finishing position of 10.1 last year, theirs (being charitable and putting Luton at 20 and us at 19) had an average finishing position of 11.9. If you're not being charitable and you put us at 22nd and Luton at 24th then their opponents drop to 12.8.
