Anyone remember the Golden Goal? Did anyone ever actually win it????

For those who are too young it was a competition that was on the go when my dad first started taking me to the Lane (and indeed on many other grounds at the time).

You bought a ticket, one of those "tear it open" affairs, and inside there was a time in minutes and seconds. Once (or if) the first goal went in the tannoy would spark up with the time of the goal and some lucky punter would be picking up a few bob.

Well I think it's time it made a comeback. Quid a pop, 5400 possible combinations, £2000 to the winner, £200 for a second either side, £3000 to the club to pay for a weeks hair gel for our badly booed heroes.
Come on Batho, pull yer finger out!

Does it have to be a Utd goal? If so, it's a non-starter as no one would be stupid enough to buy a ticket
(on second thoughts, judging by some of the optimism on here, maybe it would work)

It'd be a doddle to do it as an SMS-based competition and it'd probably cost the club virtually nothing to administer. You could also push it wider than the attendance, keeping it going for away games.

Definitely need a roll-over for United goals. If it was goals in open play we'd have had a decent pot to go for at various points this season.

We all used to buy them and yes it was on the first goal by either team

Does that make me stupid?
;)

Knew you'd remember it BOSS (being/looking a good 20 years older than me like).

When did it stop? I remember my dad buying the tickets every match but I don't think it lasted until I was going on my own 73/74 ish.

Our local runs a golden goal competition for the big games but only on minutes, not seconds. £1 a go, 90 minutes in the pot, winner takes all.

While we're at it, what happened to fish n' chips? Not seen at Bramall Lane or elsewhere for about 15 years!

I think this is a very good idea in theory. You would text the club on a certain number to enter and they'd text back your golden goal time. Then text you again if you've won. It would give the game an added bit of spice as the clock ticks around to your Golden Goal time.

In practice, the club would probably spoil it by charging 50p for the text on top of the £1 to enter. Then they'd make about 10 announcements before and during the match reminding people that the "Golden Goal competition sponsored by Accurist (keeping you on time since 1894) hasn't been won yet. Text this number NOW to avoid disappointment"
