The enigma that is Didsy

Like everyone else, I appreciate many parts of his game, but if Chris Wilder is the man I think he is, he will be looking for his replacement right now. We are 7th in the biggest and best league in the world, and if we have ambitions to compete with the top 10, we have to do better in his position.
Harsh but true.
So should Wilder be looking to replace everybody in the team then? You need to take a step back mate and think where we were 3 short years back. Let's see where we finish at the end of this season and then look at how we need to progress. Didsy and the lads are superb this season, so get off his back.

If McGoldrick could score goals consistently he wouldn't be playing for us, as simple as that. He's the most technically gifted player in our squad for me and what he brings to the style we play is as valuable as any chances he misses. Look how we struggled to create when he was out earlier in the season
So which of the 6 clubs above us in the league would sign a 30 plus year old McGoldrick?

I can see both sides of the argument and I think whilst ever the points are amassing hes safe but if we start losing and hes missing chances then he will be dropped

It’s very frustrating. He does a lot of really good things but his finishing is abysmal. Does he cost us more points than he gains? I’m undecided.

Not so outlandish really. All Managers are constantly looking to upgrade, but Didzy, much as we love him, is currently a glaring weak link, at least in the goal scoring department. We can't rely on Mousset alone. Imagine if he had taking just half of the glaring misses, we could be 2 or 3 places higher.
Imagine if he wasn't playing? We could be 11,12,13 places lower in the league.

Everything in his game is premier league apart from his finishing. But he’s a striker, we simply can’t afford to carry a striker who doesn’t score goals.

A Didsy who scores goals should be number 1 on our summer shopping list if we want to strengthen as a club.
He’s not a striker per se, he’s the oil in our machine..

If you’re questioning what Didsy contributes to the team I literally think you must be downing 8-10 pints pre game. He’s in the mix for POTY for me.

As Wilder says again today, we’re a better team with him in it.

How many goals has he actually been involved in ? He has one (tenuous) assist, and no goals.
Did you not watch Moose’s goal against Man U? Everyone followed Didzy down the left wing, leaving Fleck to see the pass down the middle. The dummy down the touchline second half?

The man is class, but he is not a striker

I can't be arsed to check but I'd guess that he's been involved in pretty much all our goals scored while he was on the pitch.
I can think of at least 6 of our players who have been more involved with our goals, including two defenders.

How many goals has Didd( double D works wonders)
sy set up this season that we have gained a point or won from....not having a go at anyone but if someone has the stats to post, for one he is a blade, 2 is working his gonads off FOR THE REST OF THE team...do you think someone like FF or the next golden boot 10 mill wonder that JR was supposed to be could do that in the PL....at the same age....ok yes Mcg makes the odd mistake....but hey don't we all...perhaps this is Mcg's leon season, VAR aside, we all want him to get a goal..and when he does then ferking watch out.......he is like a ticking time bomb......'Billy.Leon,Lundy,Fleck,MagicHat,Bouncekiller and the rest"

Theres so much more to football than statistics.
This I agree with, and it’s hard to argue we don’t look a better side with Didsy in it - we do. He creates space, gets us further up the pitch because of his upper body strength and technical ability in his hold up play, football intelligence is second to none and he really is the perfect link up player.

But we need to be looking at how we can evolve and for me the next step in our evolution is scoring more goals, so find the next Didsy who can actually score goals. We can’t not play him, so find the new him.

On current form I think he's one of the best if not the best deep-lying forward in the country. We already know that our system doesn't work nearly as well without him in it, and it's not even clear to me that anyone else would get into the positions he does in the first place, let alone finish them.

If he keeps getting into these positions, he will score. Just as he did last season--remember we had this exact debate about him last season and he came good and then some.

No room for sentiment, and although McGoldrick is one of my favourite players, if we can upgrade on him I'd be delighted. But who, seriously? Even if we think there's 30-40 million available, who can we sign who does what he does?

You dont simply go out and find a player that has all the attributes of McGoldrick but with the finishing of Sharp.
There are very few in the world, even less in our price range.

The positives are his brilliant link up play and the fact that he’s actually getting on the end of these chances. The negatives are that he could have won the game for us several times over. At the moment the positives easily outweigh the negatives......But how long can “little old” Sheff United afford to have a striker who is exempt from scoring goals?

Let’s hope the next Dennis Bergkamp is available, affordable and fancies moving to Sheffield. 😉

Would be lovely mate, but Wilder will already be compiling a list of targets, maybe even someone(s) we're not aware of. We need at least a second forward capable of converting, period. If Moose is injured for some time we're in trouble, so as much as McG offers so much, the fact that he seems incapable of converting on a regular basis is worrying.

Moose was bought under the radar of most fans, so let's hope there's someone else who Wilder is aware of. McG gas sublime skills and maybe a different position might suit him, but it's clear that with all the good football we play, that if McG is on the receiving end of a return pass the odds are he'll not score

Wilder says we are a better team with Didzy in it and that's good enough for him - end of thread.
And that’s the enigma. Unfortunately he also cost us a goal today by letting their player drift past him and plant a free header into the net.
