Surely the English championship would piss that? So yes I’m all for it

But it’ll come in after we get promoted to the Prem, run for one year, then be abolished when we get relegated back into the champ. In the meantime, Wednesday will have been in it and won’t shut the fuck up about it for evermore

So no, I’m out

I wonder how you would qualify. If it's finishing in the top spots if the championship then you wouldn't be a championship team when you play in it.maybe a consolation for the play off teams that don't get promoted.

The Anglo Italian Cup has had a number of guises over the years. In the most recent variants, eight English Clubs participated. That was basically the relegated teams from the top tier, and the highest finishing, but not promoted, clubs from the second tier.

At different times, some Clubs couldn't or wouldn't enter, so the qualification had a feeling of - next can off the rank who wants a fare.

Contested by their reserve/youth teams - chances are they'd be in the promotion or play off mix again the following season so they aren't going to risk players in a new midweek tournament.

It wasn't pre season when we were in it. It wasn't friendly when we were in it.
Given the sport is now all about money, no Championship team with a reasonable chance of promotion to the PL would want to play in it, and if they were forced, they'd play the U21 team.

While I agree with your hard arsed assessment. What have we become? You can play for money. Or you can play for football. We should relish the thought of challenging ourselves against Sampdoria, Spezia, Palermo. But we can't because we've got Stoke soon. Visionary....

A competitive pre season competition for clubs from England, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Italy.
Played by any team that finishes top 7 but fails to gain promotion to the top league, and those teams relegated from their countries top division.
It cannot be compulsory, because some teams won’t be able to afford it..

Will always maintain that this should be scrapped and then the League Cup be limited to the 72 (maybe actually invite the top 8 from the Conference to make byes for the Champ/L1 straightforward)

Only a small chance of Sampdoria though, according to the tweet it's actually for clubs across Europe not just England and Italy, so it'd mostly be "glamour" ties against the likes of Etoile Carouge, Makedonekis and Pogon Grodzisk, based on randomly picking sides currently near the top of the Swiss, Greek and Polish second divisions.

I mean, a few on here will know my M.O., so those sound far better to me than Sampdoria anyway.

It seems very unlikely to happen. And if it did, it'd have to have a viable financial model. And that model would be based on some TV/Screening Revenue. So, the organisers would have to think very carefully about which countries and markets they included. Maybe it would only cover the major, popular Tier Two Leagues.

Personally I’d like to see either the League Cup and the Papa John’s scrapped and replaced with an EFL Cup or Scottish sides admitted into the league cup as is.

I’d be all for a resurrected Anglo Italian Cup or similar but can’t see being a goer in this day and age. Fans of most clubs are more interested in avoiding the dreaded ‘tin pot’ label from some spotty youth with an Mbappe avatar than they would seeing their team lift a trophy or play a mysterious European outfit and possibly tick off a new ground.

For me personally I’d love to see us play a game abroad but need more than the 2 weeks notice the club usually offer when they go abroad pre season.

I remember going to an Anglo Italian game at the lane in my youth when it turned into a mass brawl and a bunch of players got sent off. Is that the one you’re referring to? Fun times!

That was v Udinse in Aug 1994. Bassett played a more or less first team. We had 3 sent off and they had one. Bassett went as well and we lost 2-1.

After that, DB played youths and reserves in the remaining 3 games.

Was it Italian refs in England and English refs in Italy? That’s how I remember it.
