I'd be all for throwing the first rounds of both cups if it guaranteed promotion. It doesn't

So Bristol City haven't won the league and the JPT then?

Surely the cup run would have ruined their chances of pissing the league?

Oh, wait a minute ..........

They still won a cup compo and won the league. Good cup runs and gaining auto promo are not mutually exclusive.

Fact is we bottle too many games and don't have the mental toughness or the leadership to overcome the obstacles placed in our way

I think the basic fact is that they a better side than us, over the season, and well done to them. But should we get promotion, the detail will be in how we invest for the next season and how they do. Long way to go to yet though.

We rested players in league games because we wanted tgem fit for cup matches
bet bristol city didnt do that

dont think playing walsall in a competition only Johnsons paints board enjoys is quite as wearing as playing tottenham home and away with a chance of europe
unless britol have qualified for the Buerger paints european emulsion challenge cup

we will end up having played more than 60 competitive games
busting a gut before the play offs start would be crazy , lets focus on the post season championship and go for a 3 match winning run

Why would we play 60 games if we prioritise promotion by resting players in the cups

No cos they've had a decent balance in the side from the beginning of the season and all parties knew what they were about. They've had a settled side with 12 players playing more than 40 games this season and Cotterill has no need to chop and change. Settled side, balanced side, mixture of craft and graft, strength and guile, power and pace.

It's a recipe that we appear to be still struggling to comprehend - hence the mammoth squad and the lack of quality in depth. Chop and change, square pegs in round holes - out of necessity or bad planning?

Any review of the current season should conclude that it shouldn't have taken hindsight to see where the problems lay and why the fuck wasn't the CB problem and the CF issue treated as a top priority?

If main targets were not achievable is it right that we appeared to just sit and wait or should we have gone for alternatives?

All fair points but not sure what any of tgat has to do with what ive been saying

lets face it if , nay when we go up , when we play championship clubs again our cup runs will make them more wary of our capabilities
and we get chosen for more tv games again more revenue

its how it works now

Somehow Cotterill has transformed a bunch of Championship misfits and has beens plus a few L1 journeymen into champions.
What he did do was start fast not wait six months into the season before we addressed the striking situation.
Bristol finished well like us last season but he sorted things out pre season we had to put it mildly a poor pre season.
From what I've seen of Bristol they play a basic game with a settled side.
Clough is so arrogant and besotted in how likes to do things he won't change.
That is why he'll never move to the next level as a leader.

So all those seasons when the likes of Blackwell and Wilson bailed out of the cups at the first attempt to the likes of Hartlepool were all forgiven because it guaranteed us promotion then?

Then back to the real world. No it fucking didn't, it just meant we stayed down with even less revenue than we might have had giving us less chance of being promoted the season after. We have managed a cycle of going downward without significant cup runs and now we're getting the same amount of success in the league but having some top matches thrown in as well. I know which I prefer.
This season "failed", if indeed it has failed, due to poor recruitment (particularly in the CB area) in the summer transfer window that left us too far behind by the end of January to mount a significant tilt at automatic. NOT because we won a few cup matches.

The Cups only become the convenient excuse AFTER we fail. Started with Colin and his inability to take any blame for the capitulation against Wolves. Sadly some people fell for it and now it's a standard.

Quite. After 8 league games this season, we only had one ever present - and that was Mark Howard.

Clough had no idea what his first XI was on day one, and the situation isn't that much better today.

When the Prince got involved I think these Cup runs have had a fantastic impact on his attitude to the Blades. In his wildest dreams he could not have imagined that in his first season at the helm of a third division team, we would beamed live around the globe, showing an exciting and pulsating semi-final at Wembley and then the season after – another semi-final – with a worldwide audience seeing us at WHL against Spurs, and then Harry Kane et al strutting their stuff at the Lane.

I think those achievements got the Prince a few back slaps from his peers and got him involved and excited about us, and may have dragged him in a little further than he first planned (£1-2 million for two seasons then bail if bored) – and his ROI (kudos, attention, excitement, congratulations) may mean a higher investment and more patience for the up-coming seasons, than if we had finished 7th last year and 5th this and bombed out of all cup competitions in the first rounds.

So while the runs may have hindered us (although some players were cup-tied anyway) we may look back on these two seasons as the time the Prince got on board and started a trail of investment that helps us progress over the next couple of years. And that means I am happy about the Cup runs.

it did when we lost to lower league swansea

Yeah thats what i meant

Shit Judge - you really are losing the plot feller
It's as though you have just recovered from an ACL and have been thrust into the first team and you are now struggling to gain any sort of form or stamina.
There's a player in there somewhere but its struggling to come out

Ever thought of changing your handle to "Coutts"?

I think he's still suffering from his battle with BTL on another thread.

It's a bit like tackling a Jehovo on the doorstep taking on BTL. You know he's wrong, but he won't stop talking long enough to take in what you're saying. Eventually you have to give in for the sake of your sanity.
