Can anyone explain to me what the fuck that means?

'That ethos is partly why, despite the “better value” on offer, Wilder has largely resisted the lure of players from overseas.

“We’re based on an English mentality but that doesn’t mean we’ll close the doors on other players,” he insists. “We are looking to expand our recruitment, but the most critical thing is that players fit into our culture.”

I think Wilder should VERY STRONGLY RECONSIDER the lure of quality players from overseas if we can't get anyone at value here.

We seriously lack quality, and 'the culture' (whatever that is) is clearly obstructing it and I'd like to know why.

Edit: Yes this probably is an overreaction and I don't mean to be vengeful after my previous posts on foreign scouting. It goes beyond that though, I honestly don't understand why so many players have been brought in then shipped out (Evans, Hussey, Holmes) and others neglected for no reason (Wright Lafferty). I'm also wondering if Wilder has too much control/power.

I’ve said it and I’ll keep saying it.

Wilder and McCabe are like McCabe and Wilder.

Until someone comes in with modern day thinking we will never get anywhere.

It’s a narrow minded and xenophobic approach.

For all the great strides we have taken in the last couple of years this is something which really irks me. We only have a tiny fraction of the market available to us because we refuse to look beyond this tiny island we live on.

The question I have is how bad do things have to be before until the club culture adapts and will it be too late by then

That’s unfair, we’ve got a couple of Paddys in the team now!

I don’t think it will change under the current structure sadly.

But this culture was praised as being fantastic by all and sundry for 2 years when we were winning many games in a period covering 90 matches.

Lose 2 matches and now everything is wrong, don’t you think you might be over reacting a bit?

It's not really worked over at your gaff though has it ?

been going on 6 months now :)

Agree, don’t think it will change either.
Wilder stands by his principles, you either like it or lump it and hope he gets sacked.

Probably very similar to what we had under Bassett and to lesser extent under Warnock. A tight group of players who have possibly not had the breaks in their careers that they deserve and were playing at a lower level and have something to prove, good team spirit, good work ethic, no ego, strong social scene and ale. Also helps to have at least one blade in the squad.

Some of us have regularly questioned it and been labelled as 'pigs' for our troubles.

Nope, the concern of only signing British and Irish players has been there for a lot of us the whole time. The Championship is full of talented players from overseas, most of which have been well scouted and brought in for good value, yet we are refusing to look at this as an option.

Perhaps if we did have a decent scouting system and were open minded to bringing in some foreign players we wouldn’t be scratching around looking for a British striker at the end of the transfer window and have been willing to pay £5m for an inconsistent 28 year old.

I was reading the other thread where this got brought up with you and some cornipus chap, or someone, and this is an interesting point. It harks back to the "brexit club" Spanish article a while back.

I quite like the idea that we might do things a bit differently. The idea that we might be sheffield United, the team with the great academy, that produces young players for England, the team that takes promising young players from the lower leagues of Britain, and develops them into better players. Quite a compelling USP if you get it right.

However, it is / would be doing things quite differently, and like brexit, is it just a stupid fantasy, where the end result will not be as intended at the outset?

I dunno, have no answer, but do think it's an interesting point for debate.

i'm a contractor and i go into these companies.. trying to do everything on the cheap. one outfit wouldn't even give me a pen. so i end up with the crappy recycled laptop that the secretary had and i'm building software on contractor hourly rates.. the morale is shocking. massive blame culture. everyone is trying to make do but sometimes you have to bite the bullet and buy the kit. those that don't go under IME.. they have the money but resent spending it on anything. always run by accountants that know the cost of everything and the value of nothing. sound familiar?

I think the issue is that it can work at lower levels and but can only take you so far. Culture or no culture, he's made a fair amount of bad signing and thrown a fair amount of money away on players who aren't (by his standards) good enough.

I’m a fan of Wilder. Watched him as a player. Gave everything. Decent kid. Wouldn’t do you a bad turn or bullshit you.

But he’s a Sheffielder. Peasant mentality. Won’t spend a penny more than he thinks he needs to. Thinks you can get quality for peanuts. Obsessed with “price” and doesn’t see the dividing line between that and “quality”.

Forget Sheffield United for a moment...

If he personally wants to go on to become the best at what he does at the highest level in the game, then he needs to rethink his ideas on money. Because he sees spending large amounts of it (on wages for example) as “spunkin” it. Until he realises that “spunk” can also mean “invest” he’s never going to make the big time.

That's 'Copernicus'. Yer bastard. :)

Crewe & Auxerre had a similar USP.

I think the culture since Wilder has took over is embodied in the following players and they have to play as much as possible:
J Wright (could argue he is too slow for championshp)
Sharp
Duffy
Coutts
O Connell
Fleck
Basham
The rest should be fitted round them. Yet wilder seems to like playing selection games with Bill (last season such as dropping him for the Wednesday game) and Duff this season. The power games are obvious It's boring and he needs to change to just pick the side that will win football games.

Selling Brooks was to give Wilder his pocket money.

He wasted his pocket money on sweets when he could of got a good toy.

We need someone above him who knows about quality.

To understand the culture of the club you need to look for a common theme or consistent thread that sums up the club. An example...

'Blades corner..........it comes to nothing.'

Mourinho does the team spirit thing very well, but unfortunately it never lasts as players start to look past the motivational techniques and start to need more. This is why Mourinho never lasts too long at clubs.

I really hope Wilder can evolve now he is managing at a higher level and I still have faith he can, but it’s getting harder to keep that faith.

No foreign players brought in.

Thank fook the culture of SUFC is still intact
