Was very effective today. Something to keep in our pocket or something to use often? Does Sharp start against Wolves if he's not 100%?

Helps us out as long as Brooks is fit, less pressure on our crippled strike force if we only need one at a time.

Hopefully Donaldson is back either for Wolves or Forest so we've got a choice (though Lemon was great today), Billy might be back for Ipswich (Sky said 10 days into 3 week ish treatment) but it let's us use Brooks' energy, he doesn't seem to break a sweat, and ease players back with 15/30/60 minute spells.

Not a chance. He's 10 days into a 2-4 week injury layoff.

Yes, Scott Minto said something like this ahead of the game. Until Donaldson and Sharp are fully fit I wouldn't start them, particularly given how effective Clarke and Brooks are working together.

Was talking about this earlier with a pig mate. I saw summat in this combo in the Stoke friendly and after Brooks scored the winner you could see Clarke with his arm around him having a word. That to me shows the senior players are also playing a vital role in the lads progress. For me it was no coincidence to see them play as well as they did together today.

They've shown they have it in their locker to be effective at this level. But Clarke tends to blow hot and cold and Brooks is still raw, he will have bad games. We could do with Donaldson and Sharp back at 100% ASAP for competition.

It's amazing to think Moore, Freeman, Stearman, Sharp and Donaldson probably all would have started today if at 100% fitness and we still turned them lot over (relatively comfortably). Our luck with injuries hasn't been great this season, but Wilder made sure we had genuine cover in every position. So genuine that all of the aforementioned players may struggle to get back into the side. Brilliant stuff.

*On a side note, I actually didn't see a great deal of combination play between Brooks and Clarke today. Thought they worked hard and did well as individuals. Maybe I'm wrong, I was far too excited for analysis. Is Deadbat writing his usual report? Would be interested to hear his views..

I suppose the main question to ask is how do Wolves play?

We adapted our team slightly to accommodate the S6's 4-4-2 formation and to great effect.

Sharp not to start - there is no need to really.

Clarke and Brooks were exceptional as a pairing - it's a shame it wasn't those 2 v Norwich last Saturday.

What a gem.. Unleashing a 20 year old wonder-kid on derby day.. This lad is something special. Quiet, composed and lightning fast and had made the Fleck free kick within 3 minutes...

Clarke and Brooks linked up really well, sometimes an injury crisis unveils something that you don't think about initially.

That's very true JJ - Deane and Agana happened with an injury to Joseph (??) who started that season with Agana up top and got injured half way through the 2nd or 3rd game. Rest was history with those two.

Lemon?????

I think we have fallen for a bit of luck.

Today was a new strike force, severely weakened due to injuries
But it worked better than any of our other partnerships.

We severely lack pace up front and Brooks is the much needed pace.
However I think Brooks prefers space to run into, so he’d be more effective away then at home when we can counter attack.

Also Clarke can play as a target man but he’s cute and unpredictable.
Agree he’s inconsistent can look poor but he’s also capable of class moments.

It’s Clarke/Brooks and Sharp/Donaldson for me now.

And either Duffy in behind or if it’s the second pairing Brooks or Duffy behind the pair.

It worked very well. I think when injuries heal it'll be Sharp and Donaldson, with Brooks just behind and Clarke as impact sub.

I think it was actually Deane and Joseph up front for us and Joseph got injured in the first match against Reading which allowed Agana on ..... wasnt it ?

Ignoring the semantics though , you are right , every now and again a great partnership is thrown together more by luck than good judgement .

For some reason though i still dont see Brookes as an out and out striker . For me Brookes is direct competition for the Duffy role .

Not sure who it was in the Deane/Agana days tbh.

Accepted about Brooks, but our tactics yesterday with Bash in Midfield and Brooks up top worked as an away game tactic. We could also employ 3-4-2-1 with Brooks/Duffy/Sami in the no:10 roles. CW said we played it v Norwich - mainly down to injuries, but what it once again shows, is that we have ANOTHER way of changing the style and formation in a game if needed.

Is it luck or good judgment by the management? At some point we all have to accept it is judgment as too many things are going well.

Happy days though.

It's happened before!!!:cool::D:D See below:

Alan Birchenall scored both goals at Hillsborough in only his second game for United. The stage and the scene are set for you David Brooks - Step Forward young man, it's happened before!!

He was never going to come on then yesterday? I would have still put him on in the last minute so that he could sit on the centre spot and light a cigar :)

Clarke and any other for me. Good player when wired up and he has momentum now.

Brooks will need rest at times. Don't forget Donaldson's impact in his only game. Sharp will maybe only play in tandem with the pacey Brooks or Donaldson.

When the injuries clear up we will have so many choices and pace at last.

That's how Brooks played all last year for the 23s although his close control has improved. A real talent . He took a hard tackle from behind but he just shrugged it off. It is unusual to see young players being encouraged to drive into opponents without the fear of loosing the ball. The partnership with Clarke will take a bit of shifting but I am sure could slot in with any of our other strikers

No he wasn't. Must admit I was of the same thinking and I'm sure Billy will have been saying the same thing. But CW's about the group over sentimentality and I think that's fair.

Not sure who it was in the Deane/Agana days tbh.

It was Deane and Joseph up front at Reading in August 1988. Stancliffe opened the scoring and then Joseph scored our second goal but got injured immediately (think it was a pulled muscle or something) so Agana came on as sub replacing Joseph. Deane scored our third goal. Joseph had a battle with his injury for a long time and made a few appearances (he scored in the 3-3 draw at Port Vale)
