. However, with his share of the £11.5m fee they received for David Brooks still intact, United should be able to attract a new centre-forward without making sacrifices elsewhere in the team. Providing they retain a tight grip on wage costs during contract negotiations with the likes of Enda Stevens, Kieron Freeman and possibly Jack O'Connell.

His share. Is that £11.5m less £7m leaving CW with £4.5m ? If so, does it have to cover wages as well?

FFS Thornton, how many times do we have to tell you, WAGES DON'T COUNT!

All attacks on McCabe are based on the simple arithmetic of adding up transfer fees received, deducting tranfer fees paid and adding another £20m to cover the semi finals and 'extra corporate and tv revenue'.

Wages and other running costs do not count, so the only reason we have lost money in all but one year out of the last 20, is that McCabe somehow twists the accounts.

Simples!

The transfer budget includes wages doesn’t it?

Why less £7m??? Where's that bit from, I thought he said he "hadn't touched the Brooks money"??

Well if we can get Jermaine Defoe on a free / not much and a young Premier League chap on loan I reckon that would be good business. We don't want to be spending any moneh now do we?

The £7m we borrowed. Presumably to fund running costs.

Maybe he meant "his share" of the Brooks money.

Not a lot to spend on fees then?
Truth is that we have no idea what the budget is. There was apparently money left from the main budget and that didn't include the Brooks money.

I thought I read a wilder comment in one of the previous transfer windows that wages were included. But whether thats wages for the entire 3-4 year contract or for year 1 then is unclear

I'd be fucking flabbergasted if Defoe came here on a free. Even if his wages were halved we'd be nowhere near affording him. Depends how badly he wants to keep playing, I suppose.

We don't, but we know we borrowed £7m against the DB fee so it's not a huge leap of faith to think that money has gone on running costs. Obviously not gospel but hardly an unreasonable suggestion, bearing in mind previous financial results.

CEO says we will invest everything is just speculation.*Wilder will know what's available so will be looking at the players available within his budget.
He's usually very creative ,I would expect that to continue not easy to find better players with a limited budget but I think he will.
As for Defoe ! 36 year old on 80 K a week ! wouldn't touch him with a barge pole.

What is the need for O'Connell to sign a new contract? He only signed one last November and his current deal runs until 2022.

Did you not get the memo? By default every player wants to play for Sheff Utd so the ones that don't actually sign for us, it's because of McCabe/our wage structure.

You're spot on. I'm pretty sure if Defoe is interested in a top 8 Championship club there'll be others (Leeds, Villa, Norwich) who his agent - if he's got any semblance of intelligence, can manipulate the market and haggle a decent deal.

We aren't the only club out there and we're by far the worst payers within our peers.

I bet Pommpey has an answer for you Sean, why not ask him?

Tbh, I think anything we try and get into the media ahead of the window that plays down the amount of cash we have available is fine by me. Wilder’s “we haven’t even touched the Brooks money yet” comment after the last window seemed ill-advised from a possible January transfer negotiation standpoint.

As for Defoe ! 36 year old on 80 K a week ! wouldn't touch him with a barge pole.

That would be £4.16m a year. Our opponents a week tomorrow (Brentford) got Maupay and Watkins for £3.4m in July last year - 38 goals between them so far. Yes, I know these players want paying but how much would we need to offer them to tempt them away from the likes of Saint-Étienne and Exeter City? That's how we move to the next level, not players like Defoe.

We're all pretty happy with the defence even though we concede goals
We're happy with the industrial side of the midfield, getting the ball back and keeping it

But we do need a bit of foreign flair and razzamatazz to break down the stubborn defences of these lesser clubs. An Alex Sabella in this team would be amazing. And a good Argentinian flair player would create just as much interest now as it did then
A team pushing to get in the Premier League is a good move for some of these fellas and they'd be happy to come, it's just a shame that United have about as much knowledge of the eye catching, marketable, interesting overseas market as I have about quantum physics

I remember Wilder doing an interview after the summer window closed where he stated that he had a substantial amount of cash for Jan as we had some left over from the original budget plus we had gone 'nowhere near' the Brooks money.
My guess is £6-£7mil - which should be enough to get what we need in order to push on.

You do know we did get relegated from this very division the Season that Sabella arrived

Just sayin loik :)

Yes we did, but I wouldn't blame Sabella for that.
He was on a different level to the carthorses he was playing with.
He could have wondered "What the hell have I done coming here" but if he did he didn't show it and always tried his best whilst fighting a losing battle.

As bad as we were there was still plenty of interest in Sabella, it's just a shame that we had a unwritten rule at the club that anybody who's any good has to be sold to Leeds regardless of whether there's interest from anybody else or not.

Anyway, never mind all that, Sabella in this team would tear the Championship a new arsehole.
All the times when our players are camped in the opponents half but can't break through, Sabella would pick the ball up, skip through a couple of challenges, get into the penalty area and put it on a plate for Billy or get hacked down for a penalty.
It would be awesome

Well, River Plate play the second leg of the Copa this Saturday, when thats out the way maybe we can go over and pillage em :)

I have been hoping that the two owners, realising that we will probably not have a better chance of going up this season, would stump up a few bob each to compliment what may be left of the Brooks fee

Even allowing for their fall out, I would hope they could both put a fee into the kitty as a loan, that would be repayable to the co owner who loses out next May
