Sat watching Sky Atlantic's The British series ( as you do ) when the narrator mentions Bramall Lane Sheffield and the first ever floodlit game of football in the world. The magic of electricity is trialed by entrepreneur John Tasker in 1878 with 4 arc electric lamps positioned around the pitch. The 4 arc lamps are powered by a generator driven by a steam engine.
Over 20,000 attend the first ever floodlit game with many curious onlookers scaling the wall to get a glimpse of the new invention of the century. As the lights are powered on it becomes apparent that there is a problem as the lady's in the crowd start putting up their parasol's to shield their eyes from the blinding light. The lights are simply too bright and so after a quick adjustment the lights are dimmed down and the 1st ever game played under floodlighting has become a complete success. All down at BDTBL.
John Tasker entrepreneur and Blade.
