The Board's Target for this Season

It gives the Board some leeway. They can keep him given the cup runs or get rid as he's not met their target. At least he has been honest

Well yeah after last season everyone one was eying up automatic promotion (well maybe not Clough :p)

Bookies ( although way off the mark , but not usually wrong ) , board , manager , fans and all associated with the club , wanted promotion. I think Clough was quietly optimistic , but preseason set the barometer for the season imo . They say preseason results mean nowt . They did for us as they set the benchmark for what we are getting this season.

Clough if truth be known has got us and the club over a barrel .

Jim Phipps' time would be better spent away from twitter getting a new manager lined up for next season in League One.
Someone who has actually won a promotion out of this league would be a good place to start.

Nigel Adkins, Uwe Rosler, Paul Lambert and (gulps) Dave Jones are out of work at the moment.

It's certainly an interesting response, because Clough's on record as saying that he'd have taken 5th if offered it at the beginning of the season.

Seems odd that the board and the manager didn't have a common understanding of expectations.

It's difficult to object to the board setting automatic promotion as the target, given the money they've made available. I suppose the diplomatic answer from Phipps would have been "promotion" - which would have left the door open for Clough still to meet the target, but also allowed the board the freedom to take a decision should it not be achieved.

Once again, it's a very honest answer from Phipps. I just haven't quite work out the degree to which his honesty is calculated.

They said automatic at the start of the season so it would be a bit foolish to try and lie about that now.

You have got to be kidding? He failed at his first attempt with Wolves and spent 7 or 8 million getting them up twelve or so years ago. His piggy team was built by ginger. So that leaves Stockport.
Now I aint no big fan of Colin but his record compared with Jones is untouchable.
personally I would want NC to succeed, If DJ came I would loose all faith. Iain Dowie or any other such bloke NOT DJ.

I'm saying managers who've taken clubs up out of this league is where we should look next time. This could be where we've gone wrong in the past???

If Dave Jones hadnt managed the pigs but taken another club up you wouldnt be as against him.

He'd be my 4th choice on that list. However, he'd be higher up on my list of potential managers than ones who hadn't gained a promotion out of this league.

Nigel Adkins would be a great choice.
However lets see what happens with the rest of this season.

I cant see Phipps &co sacking Clough as he seems the type to get a guy in & then give him enough time to do his job.

Whatever people think about Phipps, you have to say the guy has integrity & honesty. Thats not something that we have been used to from our boardroom in recent years.

If we don't get promotion this season who is to say Jim Phipps will still be co-chairman he might well find himself behind Nigel at the job centre.

Jones was pretty fortunate he got the dead cat bounce coupled with our collapse. He'd also want to change a lot of players to suit his style so we'd almost be starting from scratch again. Can't rule anything out but I'd be surprised if it worked and he'd be given no time by our supporters.

If be very surprised if we could attract Lambert but he'd probably be good, if the Villa job hasn't broken him.

Rosler has done nothing. A bottler who benefitted from Warburton's recruitment when he was DoF.

Adkins, slightly weird. Had the country's best academy at his disposal and the backing of a billionaire owner at Southampton but even taking that into consideration did well. Did well at Scunny too. Reading are in a decline that started before his arrival so can't be judged too harshly.
Probably a good fit with our players too.
Unfortunately, still no guarantee he'd do any better than Clough and I'm not convinced he'd come to us. And if we weren't in the automatics this time next year how much would his constant optimism piss us off?

Phipps is just the Prince's right hand man, I don't think for a minute he's got any clout on the football side of things which would warrant him getting the push. As I've said elsewhere, we don't yet know how much patience the Prince has and if we fail this season, it will be interesting to see how that side of the ownership reacts.

Where's Kevin btw ?

I'm pretty sure that Clough will be fired if we don't make the play offs this season.

I don't think the prince will accept failure.

But could have said play-offs in order to take some pressure off Clough. That tweet doesn't help Clough at all.
It's as honest as Phipps is. Ask him a question, get an honest answer.

If/ when we don't achieve, Jim is just as accountable to the prince.

If we don't achieve promotion everyone involved at the lane , (even us fans are coming in for stick , for voicing displeasure with recent results and performances.) will be accountable. Crowds next season will be around 13 / 14, 000 but BDTBL is no longer a fortress , never mind how many are in.

As said before football is full of fine lines , Lady Luck and rub of the green.

Clough last season finishing 7th , we all , including the bookies thought we would kick on this season for automatic promotion.

However last season the drivers of the side where Brayford and Coady who were loan players, and went back to there parent clubs.

Harry was a force at the back , but decided he wanted to move on .

These three players weren't there this season , and that has been a telling factor .

The Evans factor also played a part in all this , as i am sure the board thought he would be back in a red and white shirt.

Clough recruited Higdon and Wallace , one has not hit the ground running , and injured and the other a permanent sick note.

Either he has been unlucky with mitigating circumstances , ( he has had to build the foundations of the first team from scratch ,) or he is not that good as a league 1 manager , although i am sure we could hold our own with the same set of players in the championship

We are still in the mix , and lets hope our luck turns by reaching the play offs and winning them.

My view is we stick with Clough this season and next whatever happens . I know the saying is you make your own luck , but fate has certainly been against us.

A CH on loan would certainly help the cause .
