Blades extend overseas scouting

Blackwell aims to bring in foreign players (Getty Images)

Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell is extending the club's scouting system to include plans for attracting players from overseas.

The Blades boss, who signed a three-year deal last week, told BBC Radio Sheffield:

"We're developing a brand new scouting system that will be more inclusive both home and abroad so we could see one or two foreign players coming in.

"What we've got to do is not sign the big names but the right names."

United have also announced that chairman Terry Robinson is to become the new chairman of the Blade's associated club Ferencvaros.

Robinson will combine the role in Hungary with his duties at Sheffield where he will look after transfers.
But he told BBC Radio Sheffield it will be a huge job: "I think it will be a 50-50 split, the key times in England are now until July and it is also the difficult time in Hungary."

Sheffield United linked up with the Hungarian club after PLC chairman Kevin McCabe bought a stake in the famous Budapest club in February.

hopefully blackwell will stick to his guns and won't just listen to that plank robinson. if not, we could end up with a hungarian no-good on a 5 year £10k/week deal who isn't fit enough to be a ball boy!

'our terry' lookin after transfers..................... are yer kiddin ?

Is this McCabe speakin with 'forked tongue' ?

Robinson was said to be leaving his role at the end of the season.
Who knows what that actually means. Looks like "his role" isn't going to be filled by someone else.

Terry Robinson is set to take on the tricky task of helping resurrect the fortunes of Ferencvaros whilst continuing to play a role in football administration at the Lane.
With considerable experience as a Chairman in the Football League and the Premiership his expertise has been earmarked to help put the Hungarian giants back on the football map, the club having been acquired by the Blades as part of their expanding global portfolio :
"We have invested a lot of money in Hungary and Ferencvaros has lots of potential. We wanted a hands on management style and I was asked by Kevin McCabe if I would take an influential role there.
"I accepted what is a major opportunity, given the footballing history of the club, and personally - at this stage in my career - it is something I am relishing as a definite challenge.
"Initially my time will be split 50/50, although the coming months will be the most difficult period because the summer is an important time in the English season, and it is also crucial in Hungary at the moment.
"Everything will become easier in the season and it will be all about organising the logistics. There are plenty of commercial opportunities over the there and building a new stadium can only be a good thing.
"The infra-structure is dated, although the level of support is unbelievable and this stretches across Eastern Europe."
The Budapest club is the most famous and most successful in Hungary and are ripe for restructuring having dropped out of the top flight a couple of years ago:
"Ferencvaros have struggled since they couldn't meet the financial demands of staying up and it will be a major task given that only one team is promoted each season."
With footballing links in China, Belgium, Australia, Poland, Spain, Jamaica and Brazil, United have set up a network that aims to promote the passage of players who could either play for the Blades or traded to other clubs:
"It is an ideal chance to link up our feeder club academies and get players experience of playing in Europe, because a different environment can aid the development of some of the youngsters.
"We have made offers to some of our existing professionals, which could benefit everyone. It is a good opportunity for the younger players like Liban Abdi, who scored against Fradi (Ferencvaros) in the friendly in Budapest."
Part of United's remit is to build a new stadium and plans are well underway with the formalities of the link set to be completed shortly:
"There are no issues regarding the takeover, it is just a matter of time and legal involvement. The club is indirectly owned by the Government due to financial problems in the past and Ferencvaros never came out of that ownership.
"It is complicated, but purchase has been done through the Scarborough Group. The football side is Sheffield United's once the new stadium is built although we have an obligation to run it until that stage, so it is a win-win situation.
"It is my job to make sure that everything progresses how it should and, daft as it may seem, it is a way into Europe!"
