The 1st division table on the day JFK was assassinated (60 years ago today)

Was Lee Harvey Oswald our star centre forward and Jack Ruby our main attacking midfielder at the time? Might explain our sudden collapse in form.

Good job JFK wasn't in the side too. Hecky would have scraped his brain off the back seat and told us we are hoping to get him 'back on the grass' in the next few weeks (with us not seeing him yet 60 years later).

Cant even get a repeat as we don't know who POTUS is.

Still think it's Hilary myself. Or big Micky Obama.

We were also top of what is now the Championship on the day Princess Diana died (finished 6th and missed out on promotion) and were 5th in the Premier League when Covid hit (finished 9th and missed out on Europe).

Certainly makes you think...

After about 4 games 🤣

The unravelling of those 2 situations contributed greatly to my loss of youthful innocence. Perhaps if Utd had remained top and Kennedy had lived, I would not have become a miserable old git…
Tell that to the covid snowflakes who have all lost their enthusiasm since the "no fans" season.

Fuck that. Huge game at the lane this Saturday. Fucking come on you red and white fucking wizards

VAR would be checking the book store window for seven minutes…….only to find there was no apparent infringement.

I certainly lost my enthusiasm when all we could was watch games on TV. I would rather watch a poor game at the ground (that includes Newcastle this season) than sit at home watching football. Though as time passes, it is getting harder to remember that…

On a much more trivial note, I had forgotten how easy it was to calculate goal average after 3 games. It was fiendishly difficult later in the season.
Just realised there were no calculators in those days so it would have been immensely difficult on a Saturday evening for the newspapers when the results came in. Assume they employed some clever people to do some quick maths but the volume would be huge i.e 92 clubs needing their GA worked out in time to get the papers on to the street for 5pm (when games finished at 4.35pm)

Very true. I can do arithmetic quickly with pen and paper, but 92 is an awful lot to do (some teams were alone on their points total, so could be ignored). Were there perhaps charts with all the permutations in sequence (eg 25 divided by every number between 1 and 100?)
