The £5 million+ bid we made for Coady in August

Liverpool sold him to Huddersfield for about £500,000 but he wouldn't have signed for us anyway as he didn't want to drop down to League 1, that's what he told my mate at least.

£500k... ( insert crying emoji here)

That's the figure everyone on here was quoting at the time. Where the OP has got £5m from I've no idea, stirring things up as usual.

'I confess I don't know the exact figure of what we bid'

The figure I mooted was what I thought the market value would be, even if you think it's much less like £2 million add on wages and signing on fee it's a considerable outlay and almost definitely more than what we have spent since then.

If we did bid only £2 million for Wolves' captain it's absolutely embarrassing

Hang on, he was out of favour in the summer and they were looking to replace him before they found a role which suited him in the back 3. 2 million for Coady at that time was about market rate in my opinion.

At the time CW said "Yes, we have put a bid in. What it is will remain between the two clubs. Yes, it's ambitious. But we like to think we are an ambitious club."

I think that Danny04 was suggesting that it was sub £4m.

“We think to think we are an ambitious club”

‘Like to think’ and actually being ambitious are 2 different things. I like to think I’m the worlds greatest lover. I’m not far off, but I’m not.

Used by an agent to demonstrate interest in their client in order to secure them another contract. Not unusual at all - ever wonder why Ronaldo is linked to Man Utd every couple of years just before he signs an improved contract with Madrid

I think if the truth be known, possibly in next years accounts, the amount the board have invested in new contracts for many of the staff will raise a few eyebrows.

Though salary increase don't have the same 'wow' factor of 5/10 million pound bids for players, despite costing as much.

We've made ridiculous bids in the past so the board look like they have ambition (Gazza, Nick Barmby etc). I can't imagine, if it was a genuine bid, that anyone thought Wolves would accept it or that the captain and first choice CB of the best team in the league would give up half his wages to sign for us.

The money we bid for Lenihan wasn’t enough. The reckon top championship teams are now after him.

We find the best players in the league below and then cannot buy them!

It’s a joke really.

Examples? Other than Lenihan that is (didn’t Blackburn quote £5m for him?)

If we were able to bid something in the region on £5 million then, why weren't we able to spend a similar amount in January?

UTB!
There’s not a chance in fucking hell that we offered anywhere near £5m for Coady, which answers the other questions you raise.

The more depressing thing is that some people are so dimwitted that this even needs pointing out.

He's explained he didn't know so he went for a ridiculously high figure........

Lenighan is the example, that we cannot bring in the cream of the league one. If they are around 700k we can.

OK. You said 'Players' as if there was more than one of them.

I can imagine we would quite like Powell / Dack / Maddison / Marriott.

But I like said the cream of league one are too much for us. Whether or not we want them is speculation. But we aren’t paying million pound figures and these players are in that bracket.

Original post still stands, we cannot buy these players.

I'd say 'multi million pound figures'. According to the press this morning, Peterborough want at least £5m plus add ons (possibly between £2m and £3m) for Marriott. They rejected a bid of £4m for him in the JTW (believed to be from Cardiff). Leeds, Wednesday & Forest are rumoured to be looking at him. That's quite a turn on profit from the £450k they paid for him in the summer. It might be just paper talk but Peterborough do have previous for spotting talent and getting decent fees for the likes of Conor Washington, Mackail-Smith, George Boyd, Brit Assombalonga and Dwight Gayle.

There's a player called Marc McNulty currently banging them in for a League 2 side that might be worth a look at. ;)

Never heard any fees in the region of £5m being mentioned at the time or since. Even if we had that kind of money for a player it doesn’t mean it should necessarily be spent. It should be invested wisely.

The same people demanding that their team should splash out on players are normally the same people that heavily criticise when signings don’t work out and the money has been wasted. It’s one of the shamefully embarrassing things about football culture.
