Between Baldock and Basham, resulting in an obvious offside.

Christ.

I've seen it a couple of times from us this season. They might be richer than I'll ever be, play for the mighty Blades, and have a career that I grew up dreaming of.

But fuck me I'm cleverer.

I don't want to get involved in the overreaction of some people but that moment, in a nutshell, is our biggest problem right now. I said this after the Villa game, we get so much play down that right hand side and then it comes to a grinding halt because for some reason a very good crossing opportunity isn't good enough so they play it back to the other and hope for an even better one to emerge. It's to the point that I'm not sure what we're even trying to do if that isn't the time to put it in the box.

Leon was absolutely livid with Basham. He had a perfect opportunity to cross the ball. Only he knows why he thought a pass to Baldock would be more beneficial. Let’s just hope we learn from it in midweek

What's weird is that having watched us do that again tonight some are talking about our strikers as though it's their fault.

Bash as much as I love him needs a rest.

He is a capable Championship player on his best day. Understandably you can't have your best day every game though and he's been giving a lot of us the shits for a few games.

Maybe it's ok that we just have a defender that doesn't get up as quickly, like, Heneghan, maybe we play the more mobile Stearman there and put Jake in the middle, I don't know but Bash would be out of the team I believe if we had an obvious option.

My only gripe with our strikers tonight is that they were too far apart for large periods to form any sort of partnership regardless of midfield support. I’m sure it will be addressed though

I have loved Bash last few years but he really is limited technically. He runs forward and then stops as if to say 'What do I do now?' I would rather him keep running. He is a big, powerful lad. Run at men, commit them, get them running back. He stops time after time, puts his foot on and it plays it either behind someone, to someone offside or out of play. His final pass/ball is often abysmal.

Him and Stevens see so much of the ball in the last third and have been to be frank appalling when it comes to making anything positive happen. They must have had 30 to 40 attacks between them since Xmas and I can count on one hand the number that have actually ended in a chance or real danger. Baldock has been our main threat since the turn of the year and without him and Duffy, not sure we would be creating anythign at the moment.

The strikers for me have been lazy, immobile, not really linked and not held it up but they have had no crosses, through balls, balls into feet in the box; nothing. The service has been terrible.

Don't get me wrong, neither did much worthy of note, but put a few balls into the box and then we can moan at them. I'll never have a go at a striker when we're so hesitant to give them a chance.

That is the same with Stevens. Both would have been dropped if we had serious competition but we do not. The players in reserve Henighan and Lafferty are not going to improve things in my opinion.

People have said dont be ridiculous when some have said play Freeman left back (when fit) or Leonard third centre back but the form and predictability have things means Wilder has to shake things up in some way. He seems like he is not changing his formation and then surely has to change some of personnel? 2 wins in 13 and the same players keep playing and playing poorly or inconsistently. Other than Duffy, Stearman and Baldock I cannot think of one player who can say he has played well since around Xmas. Too many have been very ordinary.

Played 30 games now and one team has outclassed us , they looked good at the lane and we struggled to beat them when one man short . It hurts to get beat but let's
keep the faith Wolves have spent 50 million + in 18 months bringing in top quality players is it a surprise they are running away with it.
The play offs are still there if we're good enough, let's see how it all unfolds.
The pigs would swop places with us I'm sure and they are far from safe.

I think Evans has been decent too but I'd agree with everyone else.

Hopefully now we're out of the playoffs by a fair bit, the pressure to maintain will be felt less and allow us to try something new.

Even just a tweak. I don't see why we don't try what worked so well at Hillsborough with hasn't really been seen again. Lone striker, someone just behind, someone to shore up defence in midfield if needed. We have the bodies now to really do that well.

Having an extra striker isn't getting us extra goals, I'd rather have one striker that's available in the box and two Duffy/Holmes/ Brooks types making chances for him. Helps that all those 3 can score too (maybe not Holmes from far out haha). Maybe something like this.
GK

Heneghan/Stearman/Bash, Stearman/Wright, JOC

Baldock Evans/Lundy Stevens

Leonard Fleck
Duffy

Brooks
Clarke

Wolves fans thought it was hilarious.

Bash gives everything,he makes some great runs to support the attack, but far to often no end product..he gets all headless chicken in the final third...I'm just wanting him to pass it off before he ends up losing the ball and we're back to square one.
Against Villa 2nd half..everyone was shouting shoot when he got the ball in space inside right position...I was thinking No...pass it Bash, pass it...it would have caused more danger for people walking down the Moor if he'd have tried a shot than trouble their keeper.

You won't be when you get on pitch:)

I'd definitely play Leonard ahead of Basham on Saturday if we are playing 3 at the back and if Lafferty can't get in now then there is no point of him being here. I don't think he is good enough but he undoubtedly deserves a chance due to the form of Stevens.

Basham's defective play in the opponent's half has been there for ages and if CW hasn't spotted it , the rest of the team certainly have.
I see him in space on the right on countless occasions when we move forward but there is a visible reluctance by the carrying player to pass to him.
This is definitely because they all know that he is incapable of creating anything.
How on earth he was ever considered to be a midfielder , I shall never know.

This is precisely my issue. The system we're playing is culminating in, typically, Basham, Baldock or Stevens delivering the final ball. We need to work on the execution in training so that our better attacking threats are on the end of the moves. Basham is ok in the engine room, and by ok I mean exactly that, but he's continually being the one to play the through ball, cross or pull back and at that, he's utterly wank.

Hopefully CW shuffles the pack a little on the next game. I'd go with Laffs in for Stevens as that makes us more solid. Let's call it right here, Laffs offered more threat going forward in the cup game v Preston than Stevens has done for a long time now. Moat of the opposition attacks seem to.come down our left hand side. Probably not just a coincidence.

Bash (top man and top attitude to sufc aside) struggles to be a competent technical footballer. His second touch is often a 'get myself oit of jail' touch or tackle after he has played a bad touch or negative pass. He is so far off his earlier season form that it is untrue.

Leonard in for Bash in the back three, Laffs in for Stevens, and Duffy back in for either Holmes or Wilson (deep song on how we set up). I'd also be looking to bring back Billy if the forwards don' start firing soon but if be loath to change it up top until they'e started getting some service again which has been almost non existent recently from the rest of the side.

This is the downside of our system. Opponents have realised they can funnel us wide knowing we then have a fullback and a centre half to create our chances. 9/10 times we won't penetrate.

The case for playing Holmes and Duffy to lend more creativity grows. Two strikers is great, but only if you can feed them....

It made me eff & jeff as well. It then this feeds into our previous discussions about the speed and precision of crosses. Because we have a tendency to delay the cross, until we are 100% happy, we do get funneled, but we end up tightening the noose around our own necks. It usually involves the 3 man passing triangles in the kop/ss corner, involving one of the players who should be in the middle coming over and thus making the likelihood of a cross less.

It boils down to the way that CW wants to play. He's obviously told them not to just sling it in to the box, that's why it happens. Because if what we were doing was contrary to his instructions it wouldn't have gone on so long. If you've got your two forwards in the box & a midfielder on or around the D, i've not got an issue with quick crosses.

Playing 1 upfront would make matters worse.

Unless we dispense with wing backs, I think that's the option - we need to have our creative players supporting out wide during the build-up as it's currently a blind alley.

Duffy often does this brilliantly but he can't be everywhere. If we dispense with Wilson and play two tens, then whoever isn't involved out wide can join the lone striker for when the ball does come in.
