Anyway.
10 years on. Almost to the day.
Let’s remember it the only appropriate way,
by saying
FOOKIN COME ON HUDDERSFIELD …

my worst play off final defeat was Palace ‘97 at the old Wembley, could only get tickets via a Palace supporting mate in their end. As soon as the toothless ginger twohat scored it was goodbye. As we left we were clearly identified as Blades and for 5mins getting out of the stands was a bit hairy.

25 years ago yesterday this was 😩
This!!!!!

That was a quality United side with the likes of Fjortoft and Hutchinson as well as a top manager in Howard Kendal.

It was a real punch to the gut that side not getting promoted that year, especially losing it in the manner we did.

The Hudders defeat like the others all hurt , but for me the loss to Wolves at The Millennium was worse , after a crackin season , two wonderful cup runs & semi finals .. we were out of the game by half time .. shit end to what would have been a great season

What’s even more depressing is that we’ve not managed to score a single goal in open play in each of finals we’ve played in.

0 goals scored, 5 conceded.

I spent about two grand on two massive kicks in the bollocks from the Blades. I was living in the US at the time, and when it looked like we were going to get automatic I booked a flight to Exeter via Dublin for the final away game 'party'. Between buying the ticket and the date of the game, our form slumped, meaning we needed a win combined with a loss for the pigs. It didn't happen, although at one point a false rumour spread through the ground that the pigs were losing. Exeter turnned out to be a shithole, and it rained.

I had vowed not to go to Wembley if we made it, but after we got through the semi I found myself looking at flights again. After a few drinks I stupidly booked a flight to Heathrow and a shitty hotel in Kings Cross and traveled over again. My memories are faded now, and seem to have merged with the Hull semi. Both games involved major sessions in North London beginning with pints accompanying breakfast and shots involved at some point. I remember that the shoot out was too much for me. I left the stadium and got on a train to Euston. Didn't find out the result until I asked a copper at Euston. The next day I had an early flight with one of the worst hangovers I've ever suffered, and was back at work the following day.

are we the only team in penalty history to not to take advantage of the opposition missing its first 3 penalties
then huddersfield didnt miss another simonsen has taken all the blame but in hindsight we lost it when lowton and taylor missed

Play off final defeats always hurt, but that one to Huddersfield was particularly bad. Walking back to the car, in silence, driving all the way back up the M1, in silence.

Each to their own. Personally I was most gutted after the Burnley defeat. The whole way home on the coach I was thinking about what had already started with the sale of Beattie, Naughton and Walker in Kevin McCabe's self induced destruction of the club

The journey home from every showpiece defeat was the worst part. For the Hull semi I learned the lesson and stayed in the smoke for an extra day. Bit of sightseeing, decompress, quiet train home.

Sigh…

In a way I'm glad we lost to Forest, especially after playing so well in the second leg. We finished the season on a high. We'd have probably lost at Wembley anyway. Even if we won, we'd have certainly been in a relegation battle in the PL next season. Hecky could have been replaced if we looked like we were going adrift at the bottom, and there's no guarantee that any new manager would do any better. As we saw under Wilder, relegation brings bitterness and disharmony. When we are losing every week, our fans quickly forget the good times, and start turning on the players and manager.

As it stands we're among the favourites to push for promotion next season in a league that's full of big clubs, and a few decent new awaydays including Sunderland and Rotherham. And no VAR, in a league where any club can finish in the top six, and any club can be relegated.
