With our apparent lack of firepower who would your team be over the 2 legs?

I'm thinking away, we need Cresswell upfront on his own with help from midfield. Depending on the way of the game, Porter should come on as sub towards the end either with or for Cresswell. Quinn having a free role

AWAY 4-2-1-2-1
...............................Simonsen..................................
Lowton..Maguire..Collins.. Whoever (they're all dogshit)

........................McDonald...Doyle...............................

...................................Quinn.......................................

Williamson..........................................Flynn/O'Halloran

................................Cresswell............................................

HOME 4-4-2

As above but Porter in for Quinn/Flynn/O'Halloran

Simonsen

Lowton
Maguire
Collins
Taylor

Williamson
McDonald
Doyle
Flynn

Cresswell
Porter

For both legs.

4-4-1-1 away;

Simmo

Lowton
Maguire
Collins
Taylor

Flynn
Williamson
Doyle
McDonald

Quinn

Cresswell

Asking the team to play in a completely different formation than the one we've used for the vast majority of the season seems to me to be a dumb idea.

Reacting to the loss of your top scorer by halving the number of forwards you are using also seems less than intelligent.

if i am sat in the stands and porter is read out on the team sheet i will walk out.

Agree completely, the 'Blackwell approach' of changing a formation, particularly when 4-4-2 has served us well all season seems a backward step at this stage. Stevenage will probably expect us to sit back on Friday so the best thing to do would be to play our system, our way, even if we are struggling for personnel up front.

I think the team will pretty much pick itself and the only question for me is Squinny or Flynn on the left. I'd probably go for experience at this stage and go for Squinny with Porter and Cressy up front.

Based on how they played at our place, we need someone to stop their number 15 walzing through the centre of our midfield. Can't remember when Monty becomes available again or if he's fit but he could do that job and leave Doyle, Williamson and MacD to create opportunities. I would ideally like to see us go on the offencive, as we did at Notts County and Rochdale, but don't think we'll have enough movement up front to sustain that.

I have adjusted that for you

It's not just losing Evans though is it. We've lost Hoskins & Beattie too. Cresswell & Porter can't play 90 mins (realistically) and O'Halloran is a bit poor. So, i ask you this.

If we play Cresswell & Porter upfront and are losing by a couple with 20 mins to go. How do you change it? They'll both be ready for their bath on 70 mins

We were actually at our most effective with the big men on against Stevenage at home.

Surely you could a bring one of the academy/ reserve players in? Danny Philliskirk can score given the chance. Give them time to shine?

who is the reserves top scorer (please don't say porter)? surely we must have a young lad full of confidence seen as they have just won there league. It might only be the reserves but goals are goals and confidence is key.

They did OK together, or at least we still got the results early season, pre Ched.

Yep. I've got absolutely no problem with the both of them starting.

Philliskirk was, I think, at the Exeter game. There were 3 of the squad behind the dugout - Ertl, Monty, and one other. Thought it was Philliskirk, could have been D-Mac.

Speaking of which, is now the time to bring back the winner of our Goal of the Season award? :-)

Not a chance, Doyle and KMac have done well since KMac came back into the team, no need to change. It'll be Porter in for BT and Danny P taking Porter's place on the bench I think.

simmo.
lowton, collins, maguire, taylor.
flynn, mac, doyle, willo.
Cressy and porter.

i dont see point of us doing the play - offs we always mess it up somehow.

The point i'm trying to get at is. They can't last 90mins and what if one gets injured? Who do we bring on? I think we need to be cautious away then 4-4-2 at home. If we are playing 4-4-2, my gut feeling would be Cresswell & O'Halloran with Porter coming on for Cresswell when he's f@cked

I was just thinking exactly the same, surely the ressies will be brimming with confidence, why not give a couple of those lads a go?

The stat that Cooperblade posted suggests that Stevenage are a slightly better team when they're underdogs. It seems they struggle more to win games when the onus is on them to attack and score.

They won only 10 home games this season (we won 16). They scored 36 goals at home (we scored 54). I think this further proves that dominating games isn't their main strength.

On the face of it, sitting back, let them run out of ideas and then counter attacking seems the best strategy. But let's not forget our away game there. It was a game where we actually had pace going forward (Phillips and Clarke both started), but we had poor distribution with Monty and Doyle forming our central midfield and I remember Quinn too often slowing things down when we did have the chance to break. We looked awful.

We must seek to find the right balance between defensive solidity while also making use of our superior quality going forward.

Their main threats:

  • Counter attacking
  • Runs from wide men Freeman (left) and Wilson (right)
  • Shots from central midfield

My team:

Simonsen
Lowton Maguire Collins Williams
Williamson McAllister Doyle McDonald O'Halloran
Cresswell
The formation and slightly deeper defending should help deal with their counter attacking. As Freeman played so well at the Lane and is likely to play wider on the left in the first leg, I don't think we should break up the Lowton-Williamson combination (it is also a key part of our attacking), although I was tempted to play Williamson centrally.
Williams is the quickest left back and that alone makes him best equipped to deal with the pacey Wilson on their right. Taylor has still looked fragile to me and I'd be nervous to see him mark Wilson again.
If that works, O'Halloran should have more license to bomb forward on the left. If Cressy is on his own up front we must have some sort of pacey outlet and O'Halloran is the only one we've got. I don't think he knows where to run when he's up front, but hopefully starting on the wing will see him break, roam and cause problems for their right back (who is normally a centre half).
Their central midfielders Byrom and Bostwick are both decent long shooters, and I think a central midfield trio would be useful. I put McAllister (rather than Quinn) in there as he's competetive, represents a fresh new face and I think he's capable of getting into the box and provide us with a goal threat along with McDonald.
Their left back Laird is poor in the air, and we should look to single him out at the back post, like we did when Cresswell nodded in his goal at the Lane. Lowton getting up for back post headers can also be a good idea.
